Libertarian Gorge Hike-Hardy Ridge, WA

This hike has been updated and we will now be doing the Hardy Ridge Loop on the WA side:
http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Hardy_Ridge_Loop_Hike

If you are carpooling $5 gas money would be appreciated by drivers.
You can carpool by meeting at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. Transit @ 9am (you can park your cars there as do other meetup hiking groups) with Wes.

A Discovery Pass is $7 per car per day & you can pay @ in cash at the trailhead.

I will meet you at the trailhead @ 10am vs. doubling back into PDX when I live in Vancouver & take SR-14 to get to the Equestrian Hardy Ridge Trailhead off of Kueffler Road (take sharp left before Beacon Rock by the Ranger Station):  http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Hardy_Ridge_Equestrian_Trailhead

There is no cell service at the trailhead so if you're running late, I will wait.

Distance: 8.1 miles round-trip

Difficulty: Moderate/difficult

I am going to be a bit of a time nazi at the gateway transit center for the carpool ... I don't want to leave Jessica and the team waiting at the trail head and with the weather the sooner we start our ascent the more comfortable we will be. Drink lots of water tonight in preparation!

I'm bringing at least 6 bottles of water & a bigger backpack. Walked for 2 hours today & guzzled H2O.

My plan was to bring 2 - 1 liter stainless canteens and probably a couple bottles of orange juice.

I will be @ the gateway transit center at 9am sharp. Call me if you are just running like 5 minutes late or something... but I am likely to encourage the carpool to leave promptly so we don't leave Jessica waiting at the trailhead for us. Correct me if I am wrong but I think there are 5 of us meeting at the gateway transit center... can anyone fit 5 in one vehicle with space for everyone's light gear in the trunk?

Oh wait... I see Russ is driving with a +1 by himself to the trail head.

      That leaves I think:

Amanda and Adam carpooling to the Transit center.

Bill and I driving separate to the transit center.

That means a full crew at the transit center is 4 of us -- which should fit in the Prius in theory.

If we stick to the main trail/service road, that eventually meets a standard trail that zig-zags to the upper ridge trail, we'll mostly be shaded.

I agree depending on the side we take up and down, the terrain will block the sun.

Shade on a 90 degree day sounds like a good idea... I am drinking extra water tonight in preparation.

Change of plans for me but I'll be there. My friend just called and wants to give it a try. I'll meet up with him as we live a 1/4 mile from each other.

We'll be at the trail head at around 9:30am

Bring extra water .. high of 94 and sunny with only a very mild breeze. Getting heat sickness/stroke is officially not allowed and against the rules --- so pack a little more water than you think you might need.

I apologize, I RSVP'd this event by mistake. My husband and I will not be attending.

Sounds like it may be warm on Sunday. Best to bring a hat, sunblock, 3-4 bottles of H2O, & bug spray (in typical summers it can get buggy).

Amy & I will meet you guys at the Equestrian Trailhead parking lot off of Kupfer Rd.

I'm open to driving. I drive a Prius, so I can fit 3 other adults comfortably, 4 if you don't mind being a little squished in the back.

I think I could meetup with Amanda, then grab Russ and Justin on the way. A Prius would be much cheaper to drive out there. But I have a station wagon so I can fit alot in there.

I want to rally at the gateway transit center and either drive a small group or hitch a ride. I have a pass with a blank line on it.

      Oh wow!

      June 23, 2013

    • Russ R.

It took me exactly 4 hours with maybe a 10min break to eat. I believe I did, at least I made it to the highest point possible, then turned around as I knew the way back but wasn't sure about the way forward. If we do go where I ventured too, I can say this, I know the hard way up and the much easier way up :) if I was at the right location.

      On this map
      http://www.portlandhi...

I started at Parking/Trailhead stayed to the left at the first 3-way, then up to .34 above where Gorge is. Then around, I think, I started to lose my bearing so I just high tailed it back down that straight run marked off as 1.34. I think those mileage estimates are conservative. The way I took might have been close to 7.5 - 8 miles but because of the inclines for basically the first 4 miles it was 20 miles worth of effort.

Well, apologies if I caused any delays. Due to a calamitous morning, aka incompetence on my part I was not able to hook up with the group.

Woke up a little late, rushed, forgot my directions so I headed to the carpool zone based on memory, found no one, figured I had the wrong area. Then I was running on fumes, had to go to the bathroom soooo bad that I went to Fred Meyer, then gassed up and headed to Hardy Ridge based on memory again.

Was at the Hardy Ridge equestrian trail head off of Knueffeler by 10:005am. Waited around and figured I had the wrong area so I went on my own hike up to Hardy Ridge. Man that was brutal. I need to drop another 20lb before trying something like that again.

      too bad.

I can only fit one driver (me), one adult, one smaller adult and one tiny adult in my car. Cargo capacity is high since it is a hatchback. I am willing to ride with others. Adam's vehicle might fit 4 more comfortably -- not sure.

Great, thanks for the offer. I'd definitely be willing to write along in any of your cars & pay the gas money thanks!
