To all "Life, Universe and everything" - MeetUppers, who make this such a great discussion group. You bring your profound knowledge, your good sense of humor, your interesting view points and your inspiring ideas ! Thank you all, you are really a wonderful bunch of ponderers !

Sounds good to be praised and acknowledged like this, doesn't it ? We all like and need approval. How much though, we probably don't realize. How does the need to be liked and accepted influence our relationships, our work, our self-esteem ? Do you stand up for your beliefs even when they go against the "norm" ? How strong is peer pressure in your life ? How do you cope and deal with criticism, honesty or even blunt dis-approval ?

A delicate subject, I know, but maybe one that goes a little deeper than usual, becomes a little more personal ? I hope it does not put you off. Be daring ☺

Ziggy

Considering the notion of 'approval' I get inundated with emails from persons who have hit the "good to see you button' promoted by the website to which we are expected to respond by hitting the "Good to see you too" button. I think that to reinforce the richness and diversity of society we should also have a: "If I never see you again I won't be disappointed" button.

Which brings us to the subject of acceptance...more important but harder to do than approval.

Lois, a possible answer to your question on why we regard other peoples approval as more significant than our own..,probably because we can kid ourselves and tell ourselves whatever we want, however as other people are the mirror to what we are really like in the outside world, we give their opinion precedence over our own.

Hi, I've just been looking at Byron Katie's website www.thework.com and under the Mental Health category there is a great 7 minute video titled "Fear of Disapproval" ...seems pertinent to this week's discussion

We all feel we need approval. But, I can't help of thinking of the line in the Spice Girls song, is this 'What you really, really want?'
