Hey Ken,

This is Lita (Dan's wife and the Linux would first try to use the package manager to use the GUI to upgrade....I prefer synaptic, but the installed one (adept) should also should be able to open it & see Upgrade on the menu toolbar...if not, just install synaptic from where you install additional software & then you should see it...alternatively, there is a command line way (if you prefer this e-mail back); I am including a few web tutorial links as well.

(they have different info on the links even though they appear the same)

Possible issues:

Interesting reading:

There have been 3 official upgrades since Gutsy: you will need to repeat the process for each upgrade you can only upgrade 1 distribution at a time (ie. feisty to gutsy; gutsy to heron; heron to ibex; ibex to jaunty & then jaunty to karmic

Hardy Heron 8.04
Intrepid Ibex 8.10
Jaunty Jackalope 9.04
Karmic Koala 9.10 (releasing in October).

I would suggest you upgrade to at least Jaunty as there have been serious improvements since Gutsy....

Good luck...if you need further (in depth) support, check out our website ( and sign-up for regular e-mail/website support.  We are attempting to build the largest consumer built Linux knowledge base on the web.

Hope this answered your questions...if you need further help, just e-mail dan back & I will intercept and help you get your system up...forgot to ask if you are using Ubuntu or Kubuntu (kde or Gnome desktop?)...both should have adept...again, I prefer synaptic as my GUI package manager, but that is just because it is easier to use...look for the upgrade on the toolbar & it should upgrade for you...make sure you have done a complete update first.

I just installed Ubuntu Fiesty on my laptop.  How do I upgrade to Gutsy through the net?
