I was recently approached to teach a class in Linux basics. The class is called UNIX for CAD Users, but don't be misled. Although it's slanted toward IC drafters/designers, there is only one out of the sixteen class hours that touches on the drawing program. The class is offered through ACC Continuing Education, more details on the class page. A brief overview of the class agenda:

  • Overview of *nix systems.
  • Working with directories & files.
  • Getting started: logins, passwords, navigation, piping, man pages, etc.
  • The shell & what's involved, including customizing.
  • Creating & editing files.
  • Ownership & permissions.
  • Manipulating files in various ways.
  • System management, environment variables & processes.
  • Utilities & more.

The class is structured for beginning users, but is sure to hold valuable information that will round out the experience and knowledge base of all users. Personally, I'm always looking to sharpen the basic skills, and this class is offered to do just that. cool
