Please join Cynthia LeFevre, High Priestess of Circle of Light and Shadow, for a Dark Moon ritual on April 7 at 5 pm at Living Earth Center. No one under 18 years will be admitted, and please, only First Degree initiates or above. In response to a growing number of requests for more advanced work, these Dark Moon rituals are intermediate to advanced level.
Please arrive between 4:30-4:55 as the doors will lock and no one will be admitted late.
Cynthia says, "The Dark Moon is often ignored; the New Moon and the Full Moon receiving preference. I believe very strongly that before you can initiate or manifest something new into your life, you need to release and clean out old or stagnant energies, ways of being, inhibiting thought patterns and behaviors. The Dark Moon is a time to look deeply at oneself, to look at, evaluate, bring into the light the darker side of ourselves, to face our inner-most fears, to open the closets, to hold up the mirror. These rituals will be intense and personal."
Because the Dark Moon falls within 3 ½ days prior to the New moon, these rituals will be held at various times and on various days of the week. Therefore, we cannot offer these every month due to other events already scheduled at the Center. An announcement will be made in advance of each month’s ritual, and a full schedule of 2013 Dark Moons at Living Earth will be available at ritual.
Question: What's a First Degree Initiate (or above)?
Cynthia's Answer: It refers to a level of training within the Wiccan tradition. Not everyone in Living Earth is Wiccan, not everyone is initiated into a particular path or tradition. Some circles have 3 degrees, some have more, some more Shamanistic traditions don't have a degree system at all. 1st degree for one circle isn't necessarily the same as 1st degree in another circle. You can get a 1st degree on-line now in only 3 months, although most Wiccans would not agree it's the same as a regular 1st degree. Most 1st degrees take a year and a day, some take longer than that.
To provide a BASIC definition I will say that a 1st degree initiate is one who has completed a specific course of study in paganism/Wicca, has worked with an already-degreed teacher, has been approved by said teacher, and has underwent a 1st degree initiation rite.
That having been said, what about those who identify as Solitary?" I will take a shot in the dark and say the following: if you've been practicing for less than 2 years, you're most likely not a 1st degree "equivalent;" if you've been practicing longer than 2 years, perform regular monthly ritual, can maintain a deep level of meditation/trance for 1/2 to 1 hour, and are responsible for your own energy and experience in ritual, then you are probably a 1st degree "equivalent," at least for the purposes of these rites, and would be welcome to attend my dark moons.
Question: Why can't just anyone come the dark moon rituals? Why is it required to be a first degree initiate?
Answer from Joy: Most rituals at Living Earth are open to everyone of all training and experience levels. However, there has been a request for more in-depth and advanced work for those who do have training and experience. We need to offer experiences that are meaningful to a wide variety of people, and we can't do that if we insist everything is done at just the basic, introductory level. The work at these rituals is intense, and there is no explanation or teaching done about the various parts in the ritual to guide beginners through what's happening. Beginners, please start with our Full Moons, Sabbats, and New Moon rituals and other events. We are now offering Wicca classes in the coming months, and we can refer you to excellent teachers in the community if you'd like to get your first degree.
