DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS (1949)

starring RICHARD WIDMARK and LIONEL BARRYMORE

A rousing high-seas adventure saga of 19th century whaling, full of action, suspense, excitement and dramatic rescues. A young boy (Dean Stockwell) comes of age aboard a New Bedford whaling ship captained by his tough old salt grandfather (Lionel Barrymore). The captain disdains the first mate (Richard Widmark) as a newfangled scientifically-trained whaler not completely up to the rigors of maritime life. As the voyage progresses, the boy begins to identify more with the first mate, arousing the jealousy of his grandfather. A touching story beautifully told against the background of the dangers of Yankee whaling. Preceded by a trailer for Captains Courageous.
