Presidents' Day Hike: Sycamore & Serrano Canyon Loop

Pt Mugu State Park (map)

Selected By: Dean

This Presidents' Day hike is about 10 miles with 1500 ft elevation gain

Here is the plan: From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we'll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon, with a lovely seasonal stream criss-crossing the trail numerous times, and abundant wildlife.

As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. We will continue through Serrano Valley across the grasslands and up the Boney Ridge. We will take our snack break here on the western shoulder of Boney Mountain.

After our well-deserved break we'll hook up with the Old Boney trail and head down into Sycamore Canyon which gets its name form its abundance of giant sycamore trees lining its path and complete the loop after several stream crossings.

Bring hiking shoes you don't mind getting wet. Long pants are advisable.

I couldn't find an exact address for the point where we are meeting. If you go to the address posted then turn north on Sycamore Canyon Rd it will be on your left across from ranger station -- you can't miss it. Here is a Google link for the meeting place:

Meet Here

There is a day use fee for parking in the campground parking lot. I think its ten bucks -- credit/debit cards are accepted. There is some parking on PCH, but its not very close to trail head

After hike lunch and shenanigans will be at Neptune's Net by Yerba Buena Rd.

It's going to be a warm day Monday and you will need more water than you have used on the last few hikes. Although I recommended long pants in the hike description, you should be ok with shorts. We will be doing some creek side hiking through riparian habitat and we may come across some poison oak. If you do wear shorts, be on the lookout for poison oak and stay on the trail. If you don?t know what poison oak looks like let me know and I will point it out ? if there is any.

If you are not going to be parking in the pay lot please arrive at least 20 minutes early. PCH parking is about 1/4 mile from trailhead

Larry, since you are buying everyone lunch, I think we should skip Neptunes Net and go to Gladstones!

I agree with Mark...there were still a few cool people left on the hike! (I of course NOT being one of them as Ken's pictures sadly document.) And Larry did redeem himself by lending a hand to those of us lacking in coordination. Thanks for the hike, Dean!
