Going Ape at Malibu Creek SP - a HWD Exclusive!

  • June 21, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • The Old Reagan Ranch

Today I will take you through Ape City, where the simian metropolis introduced in the original Planet of the Apes (1968) starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall, stood.

The City is gone so you will have to use your imaginations, but here are some juxtaposed pics to help. Perhaps those of you who know the trails will recognize some of the spots.

Most of the city was built near Century Lake

Ape City is not totally gone. There is one artifact hidden behind some bushes. I've pointed it out many times during our hikes here. For the first time I am posting a film still of "The Cage:"

To get there we will have to follow in the footsteps of astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston)

We'll stop by the Rock Pool and pay homage to Caesar

Wait! There's more......

As an added bonus we'll be taking my MCSP secret trails. One I call the Overlook Bypass, the other the Cage Creek Elevator. They are short but steep.

The Overlook Bypass is overgrown (no one uses it but us!). Wear good-gripping shoes. A trekking pole might come in handy on the steep uphills

We'll also take a side trip to a vista of Malibou Lake.

Our hike starts at the old Reagan Ranch

Hike is a loop of about 5-6 miles with moderate elevation gain (a little less than 1000' total ascent). However much of the gain takes place in short distances. This hike will be too strenuous for beginners. Adventurous moderate hikers will be ok

I'll post some more pics in the days ahead, so check back often.

Bring snacks or sack lunch for lunch by the lake

Directions:

The Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy

From the Ventura Freeway (US 101) in Agoura take the Kanan Road offramp and turn south. Follow Kanan, turn left on Cornell Way, bear right onto Cornell Road for a couple miles, cross Mulholland and turn left into Reagan Ranch.

From PCH/Santa Monica turn right onto Malibu Canyon for 6.3 miles then turn left onto Mulholland Hwy. After 3.2 miles turn left onto Lake Vista Dr (Cornell Rd). Turn left into Reagan Ranch

Outstanding, Dean! One of the best meetup hikes I've ever been on. Beautiful scenery, not too long, not too early, nice people, well organized... terrific!

First time with the group for me. Great to hike with nice people. An interesting hike, with beautiful stone formations, the lake and lots of edible plants to taste along the way - mustards, yucca flowers, ripe elderberries, ripe red currants, and others.

    June 21, 2014

    • Debbie

What tasted better, the plants or the frozen yogurt afterwards? ;-)

The yogurt! Dark chocolate rules! ; )

My second hike with Dean. Many thanks to our leader. I 'suffered' a lot, but boy, what fun!! Thanks to Francis, for his extra help. Nice to meet you, Sherri. Hope to join you again in July. Happy trails, everyone!

While I've hiked in this area many times it is still one of the most beautiful parts of the SM Mtns. Leave it to Dean to take the trails less travelled. Thanks Dean!

I hiked PMO Friday night late with a potluck on the Mesa. I am broken down and need to rest in prep for another hike up to PMO to celebrate the first day of Summer tomorrow. Starting @ 1:00, I usually double up from one hike to another. NOT on Saturday, sorry to cancel Dean.

Looks like a fun local hike! First timer on Meetup.

Damnit -I am never going to be able to do this hike. I have signed up for it several times and had to back out each time. Just got booked on a music video shoot both Saturday and Sunday. And, while I am grateful for the work, I thought third time would finally be my charm and I'd get to go. Have fun everyone!

I would like to carpool. I am in north Hollywood (101 freeway. Laurel canyon exit ).

Any rock climbers up for bouldering or a quick top-rope on the Apes wall? It is very easy to set up.

    June 16, 2014

    • Stephan

Sounds fun, no idea what i would be doing tho.

      June 16, 2014

    • Dean

We will be ascending the wall via side trail -- don't know how fast you can set up and get any volunteers to join you. If you'd like I can set up another outing with the rock climbing as the main course. Personally, I would just watch ;)

Anyone carpooling or want to carpool from the LA area? I am in Monterey Park.

    June 16, 2014

    • Stephan

I would, I'm in woodland hills tho, not exactly close.
Planned on taking a bus then hiking the last three miles. (Go figure, public transit doesn't go that way )

      June 16, 2014

    • Cesar L.

Very coool... well.. maybe someone else going out of the LA area. :)

      June 16, 2014

    June 12, 2014

  • Cris G.

    I'm so excited! I can't wait!!

    June 13, 2014

Is this a pot-luck lunch afterwards, or are we on our own to bring sandwiches, etc.?

    1 · June 12, 2014

    • Dean

Bring a snack/lunch to eat by the lake.

      June 13, 2014

So glad you changed this one to the next weekend, Dean! I am out of town on the 14th also, getting back late the night of the 20th, but I am going to try to make it to this one!

It sounds like Dean is putting the band together again to celebrate June 14. I'm in a gorilla suit hiking.
