The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao -- Junot Diaz

  • Mar 13, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

You Guys. Do you understand the importance of this meetup? We will be celebrating our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY! What a fantastic book to read for this occasion! Here are the details:

"Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fukú—a curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA. Encapsulating Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao opens our eyes to an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere—and risk it all—in the name of love"

I thought of walking from home, but I want to bring a case of Dominican beer. So, I'm driving instead...

Hi Marie! I'm still interested in coming tonight to meet everyone, but I didn't actually finish the book (I'm ok with any spoilers). If you'd rather keep it to only those who did finish I completely understand. Just let me know. : ). (Also, I have food allergies so I won't be having any pizza. I'll bring my own food. And a bottle of wine to share. ; )

Another one bites the dust - it's my final swim class.
I hope to make the next gathering.
I enjoyed the book, in particular the various comic book and sci-fi references. Had to wipe nerd drool off my chin a few times. Happy Anni!

Hi guys! I’m so sorry but I will miss our first year celebration and the book I recommended due to a work commitment I can’t reschedule. I’m glad there is another Dominican member who could expand on some of the book’s lingo. Have a wonderful time and see you on the next one! Happy Anniversary!

I wasn't able to get the book and finish it in time, but I'm definitely looking forward to the next one!

Sorry I can't make it. I might be MIA for a while-I started a new teaching job that requires a lot reading. I didn't even start the book-and I was so looking forward to this one! So, I think that doesn't bode well for the future. Happy Anniversary!

      "blue-line-able" That's hilarious!

Hi there. It will be held at my house. We generally do not post personal addresses online so I will email the address early next week. Don't worry, it is definitely blue-line-able.

I just joined and am hoping to find time to finish the book before the discussion in March. I have an electronic copy of the book that I purchased a while back. I was wondering though, does anyone else use an e-book, or is it preferred to use a hard copy?

    February 20, 2013

    • Kendal K.

      Excellent! :)

      February 20, 2013

    • Marie W.

yep, a bunch of folks use e-books. Use whatever works best for you!

      February 21, 2013

  • Raymond

If anyone has questions about some of the Dominican Spanish words or phrases while you read the book, feel free to ask.

Looking forward to talking about this book. Lots of fun language use in it. Strong themes of generational sins, reality being perspectival, and of course the need to love and be loved. Cheers All.

I just realized that the meeting is in March, and not in February which is what I originally thought! So I definitely have time to read, yay -- excited to meet up :)

Just got a new copy of the book last night.

Hi everyone -- I just joined your group and unfortunately I don't think my schedule this week will allow me to power through the book in time to come, but I wanted to say hi and hope to join in the next meeting! :)

Hmmm, I better ask before it's too late: is this supposed to be a girls only meet up, or what? I don't want to show up and realize that I'm not supposed to be there....

I've read the book before. As a born and raised Dominican, I fear that my review of this book might not be fair.
