(BMHS) Henry Cowell Hike

Join me for a shady morning hike in Henry Cowell Park, designed for a hot day.

Starting early so as to beat the weekend Hwy 17 traffic, we’ll park on Hwy 9 near the entrance to the park by 8:30. From Hwy 9, we’ll hike into the park and along the San Lorenzo River to Cable Car Beach. We’ll then start climbing along Eagle Creek, in a loop that will take us along parts of the Eagle Creek, Powder Mill, Buckeye, and BIg Rock Hole trails, taking us to the Observation Deck and through the Cathedral Redwoods grove, and ending back at Cable Car Beach. In the course of the loop we’ll wade across the river twice. From Cable Car Beach we’ll retrace our steps along the river to Hwy 9. We’ll pause somewhere by the river for lunch and an optional dip before returning to our cars by about 1:30

This is a ‘lollipop’ hike, consisting of an in-an-out leg with a loop. It’s mostly shady, with a mile or two of open terrain. Est. Distance: 11-12 miles
Est. Elevation Gain: 1500 ft
Duration of hike: 4 1/2 to 5 hours.
Difficulty: moderate
Start time: 8:30 am, end time: about 1:30 pm

Bring: water, lunch, sunhat, water shoes for wading, swimming attire and a towel if you wish.

Meeting place: Hwy 9 at the entrance to Henry Cowell. Carpooling is recommended.

Directions: Take 17 south to the Mt. Hermon exit, and turn right onto Mt Hermon Road. Turn right on Graham Hill Rd., and then left on Hwy 9 in Felton. Shortly you’ll see the big carved log with the sign for Henry Cowell on your left. Park, then meet with the group near the sign. Carpool locations: Hosted carpool at Lucky’s Market, 2175 Grant Rd, Los Altos, leaving 7:20 sharp

Hosted carpool at Los Gatos Parking, North Side Lot, located on the north side of Highway 9 between University Avenue and N. Santa Cruz Avenue (near the Hwy 9 exit from 17), leaving 7:50 sharp

A great hike with a side trip to the "Garden of Eden", a refreshing water hole in the San Lorenzo River. Thank you, Michael, for leading us and thank you, Sharon, for letting us in on the secret of finding this beautiful spot.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
