Christmas Party

Love it, hate it, or ignore it, Christmas is nearing again. So come and have a lovely evening with us for our last official meet of the year, I hope you can join the group for a dinner (and optional drinks) to meet more of our group, old and new, and celebrate with us another year of great meets and the group going from strength to strength on the 2nd Friday of December.

Regular bars will be crazy busy and probably not taking bookings for tables; a dinner at a chosen restaurant is our traditional way to celebrate the year and meet people in a slightly different place to normal with food as the lubricant for ice-breaking and chat. You'll still be able to mingle a little during the meal or as its closing down, and there's always a group headed to a club or for later drinks afterwards if you want to boogie without it being a weekday after.

As we need to book seats please be sure about keeping your rsvp updated as it gets nearer the time - and please not last-minute if you can help it. This is important, due to time, money (from the deposit) and effort of the organiser and other members. People who rsvp and don't turn up will hurt their ability to come to future booked events. Also note that anyone still on a waiting list by time of the event should NOT attend (except by personal arrangement with the organiser) - you need to manually change your rsvp to Yes when space opens up (meetup should notify you by email).

The menus haven't changed much from last year; they don't have online versions to send us but the same items are there from 2012 menus I had below (only tiny differences, and most things same price, some had gone up by 10p,20p or £1 max since 2012). These word documents are in the "Files" section for our group (in "More" menu, middle of the white bar just below our big group name at top of page).

2012 set menu (3 choices, £16.80 to 23.80)

2012 main (regular) menu - only minor (<£1 it seems) price differences, many prices the same, with same items.

PS: There is no regular 4th Thursday meet this month as usual for Christmas, as its too awkwardly placed.

Enjoyed the starter, main and dessert (ie the New World, Ku bar and Ku club!). As the info available hinted this was an easy going interesting, mixed and social group, and for a newby enjoyable without any nervousness. A good fun evening (thanks JohnG).

My profile pic is a piece of art that hangs on my wall and was the best birthday present ever created for me by an ex girlfriend.
It is me...and you can make me out cartoon and pop arted.
See you at the next meeting in January hopefully.

Hi John...Many thanks. A guy who appreciates art and culture...lol. Meet you all soon. Have a great Christmas.

That aspect might be more stereotypically gay, but the good thing about this group (for me at least) is that it's NOT like walking into a gay bar, its welcoming to all and I can be myself and not have that "filter" that I usually have on how I talk about certain things or who I talk to them about.

Hi John, I'm actually sick a bit I will try and come and if am well enough, can i bring a friend?

    December 13, 2013

    • John G

Sorry to hear that; there might be space for a friend, depends how much space they've given us. Last time there was a fair bit of space around us, but we'll see.

      December 13, 2013

  • John G

First-timers - if you're nervous, or a little late (busy streets remember, a Friday near Christmas, try to allow more time to be there for 7.30), we're a really easy group to join in with; ask me if you want help meeting people and I can meet you at the door if you're really shy and you organise it first (by mobile); but push through it, its only temporary, you'll be settled and warm and chatting like friends in no time!

    December 13, 2013

    • John G

Sorry to hear that Jason. Would have preferred you let me know a day earlier, but we'll cope. I won't black mark you for that (TO OTHERS: in case you're feeling a bit off, be realistic about whether you'll make it this evening or if you have the energy, as although its a bit late to change the booking, at least I'll know whether to expect you - and the earlier the better, if you want to avoid a black mark)

Hi John, sorry I won't be able to come to the Christmas Party this Friday after all. I've switched my RSVP to 'No' so someone else can have my place. I shall try to come to my first-ever meeting of this group in January. Best wishes, Bruce

Hope to see you in January. Thanks for the update, appreciate the respect.

      December 12, 2013

  • John G

Anyone on the waiting list - if you're a regular and turn up for your rsvps, let me know and I can assure you a spot; new members, look out for people bowing out Wednesday/Thursday, usually there's a few who just realised they can't or won't turn up in the last few days.

    December 10, 2013

    • John G

AJ yes you are; seats aren't by name but by the total count, I don't allocate which seat you're in just that there's space for the expected number of us (impossible to be exact, a few people still don't turn up).

      December 12, 2013

    • John G

Jon, grr annoying work do's :) get them to move it ;D if you can make it my last update with the restaurant should have space, but thanks for the update, appreciated.

      December 12, 2013

  • John G

Hi all, looking forward to eeing you all! its getting nearer to the night so please check you're definitely free and able to come on Friday and update your rsvp if otherwise (message me/comment here if you need help to do that, its in same place you clicked/tapped to sign up). Members who don't turn up having said yes, expect a negative mark against your title that others will see on this group. This is a booked dinner and unlike normal events (where I don't care so much) I've put lots of effort in and need to not annoy the restaurant.

Hi John, Sorry - I was really hoping to come but this week has been mental and I can't guarantee that I'll get out of work early enough to make it. Didn't want to risk messing you around so I've changed my RSVP to a No, with a sad face as this has been in my diary for six months. :(

    December 11, 2013

    • John G

Aw no! Sorry to hear that. As a regular and with your help on Greedy, if you realise you can make it, give me a call/text and there's a chance we can fit you in; you might also be able to join us for clubbing later on more easily if you have the energy, assuming we go somewhere (basically a given!) - perhaps from 10pm, 10.30ish.. ish.

      December 12, 2013

  • Mel

Hi will it still be ok if we got there for 8pm as maybe a bit late coming from work.

    December 10, 2013

    • John G

I expect you'll still be fine then, we might well be ordering around that time; but don't hang around. Everyone else - try to be there on time, it'll make it easier to find the group and grab a seat where you want!

      December 11, 2013

I am so sorry I won't be able to make it. But economically right now it is almost impossible for me to do. I really want to meet more of you, and start making some friendships. The other reason is that being vegan, the choices were limiting and expensive. I wish you all the best for the meetup, the new year, and hope to make more friends soon. I really feel gutted about this, but I am in the beginnings of a new business in PT work. If anyone wants to get in touch, and say hi, I would love to do so.

Jim. PS: RSVP changed to reflect, I don't want to get black listed for this awesome group!

Added links to last year's menus documents they sent us (in the Files section for the group), which seem to be the same apart from a few small differences and some minor price changes - cheap dim sum items still at £2.90, big dishes (eg half roast chickens and the like, most expensive was ~£15) is now ~£1 more. Minimum for regular tables is £5. If you're a long-term member who regularly turns up to events and is worried about finances, message me - I have a small pot to assist.

    December 6, 2013

    • Louise

Thanx for all the info, JohnG :-) But what does, "Minimum for regular tables is £5." mean? Guess that's for each person on any table?

      December 8, 2013

    • John G

Yes, but I don't think they really apply that for large groups unless you're ALL ordereing just one dish at £3 or something. I think its just so they don't lose out with lots of people who aren't making them enough money to cover the restaurant costs

Last year, some people met up before the dinner in a bar along with some folk from another LGBTQ-family group. Organising another meet with any more than a handful of people in any place on a Friday after work near Christmas is crazy, I've got enough to worry about with this thanks :) but if you want to, do comment on here/reply to this, and organise it among yourselves.

    December 6, 2013

Hi John, it's my first meet up with the group. I get home from work at 19:00 so I can be at New World by 20:00. See you all there! :)

  • Jim S.

I am not yet sure. What budget range are we looking at here. I can't really afford too much, but really would like to come out (no pun intended lol) and meet some new people.

    December 2, 2013

    • John G

Its not an expensive place, for London; hope you can make it, but PLEASE MAKE sure you come if your rsvp is still Yes, so change it if you're not coming, by Wednesday next week at the latest really, or end up with a black mark against you.

      1 · December 5, 2013

    • Jim S.

      Totally Understood.

      December 6, 2013

  • John G

5 more slots and a waitlist added - if you miss out on a slot and add yourself to the waitlist, you must wait for a space to open up (you'll be notified by email) and then you can rsvp yes if you're quick enough. Only then can you come; being on the waitlist is NOT an RSVP (long-term regular members in that situation who I know, who are reliable RSVP-ers, write/message me and I'll sort it out for you)

    December 5, 2013

  • Jim S.

I am booking a yes until I get economic values of the dinner. Please let me know asap so I can keep or remove it.

    December 2, 2013

    • John G

Jim, they do have a website but in the last year it rather looks like its been hacked and covered in adverts. I advise against visiting it (newworldlondon). But do a general google for "New World" london chinese restaurant (or similar) and you'll see reviews from tripadvisor and others. The value is generally rated above average and last time we were they, dishes were available for comfortably under a tenner. You can eat more or less and they didn't force us to go to a set menu like so many restaurants do at this time of year. You can do the set menu thing to make it easier/faster service though if you like.

      December 2, 2013

    • John G

Afraid I don't have menus for this year yet, but look at the files section (under "More" in the menu bar up top, to the right of the "Home", "Photos" links) and you'll see last year's menus: eg. http://files.meetup.c... for the general menu. set menus were from £16.80 for plenty of choice.

      December 2, 2013

  • John G

Am planning the same venue as last year, New World, as that seemed to work quite well and caters to wide budget range and we had our own space. Any comments?

So where we going? I'm planning to sort it out this week. Wondering about the same place as last year, or open to suggestions if you have any. Requirements: can fit ~50 of us (likely to be a little less than that but 50 should be safe allowance), and fairly central (zone 1 really) and has a range of food - not just one dish type, to cater for as many as possible (def. vegetarian options needed, vegan/others also good). Good (recent) reviews count too.
