Fun Jazz jam/coaching session for members @ BMA House

  • Mar 9, 2014 · 12:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

[This listing replaces the earlier draft listing in the calendar]

After doing a number of these in previous years, there's been interest from members to getting them going again. Thanks to member Martin Kelmanson it looks like we have the use of the BMA practice room again at no cost in March, so we thought we'd get this up and running again.

These are fun, private jam sessions for members of the Meetup who:

• Play an instrument and want to play jazz with other members, but don't feel confident enough to join one of London's regular public jam sessions

• Are learning an instrument and want to find an environment where you can learn about improvisation in a safe and supportive atmosphere, where you don't need to feel intimidated by all the great players around you, or the fact there's an audience there!

• Are already experienced players, and are happy to share their knowledge with other members and help things move along

The first few sessions in 2011 and 2012 went pretty well - as well as the members who were wearing their jazz 'L plates', we had a couple of experienced jazz musicians with us to guide us through the tunes - this format worked well, and we'll try and re-create it again.

We're going to based the jam/practice around two tunes [to be decided - suggestions welcome  from the Real Book] including songs which suits horn players. We will share chord charts and music with those attending. We can consider other tunes nearer the time, if we have time.

We are going to focus on instrumental playing this time.

Note - this is a little different from standard Meetups and so we will be organising things slightly differently because of a) the need to get a balance of members and instruments, b) the need to ensure members do turn up and c) the need to organise with security at the venue. So, if for any reason we are not able to have you participate, please understand the reasons for this.

One, we are limiting the numbers of players to ensure the event is manageable and two, we want to aim for a mixture of players - a maximum of three sax players, a guitarist or two, trumpeters, up to two bassists (I'm one), up to two drummers even.

We want a mix, which means this event is managed and selective.

In particular, we need to find from the membership: a good drummer who is willing to help help out and provide a rhythmic bass, plus an experienced jazz musician (any instrument) who is happy to join and guide members through making the most of the two tunes.

First preference will be given to people who joined previous sessions, and those who can ensure a good mix between instruments and experience. Therefore, if you sign up, you are not guaranteed to be able to participate - but please sign up and we'll do our best to accommodate everyone, within reason. We'll probably limit numbers to 10-11 people. We would aim to finish around 4-5pm.

There will be a charge made for this event of £10 for the afternoon, to cover costs (with £10 refunded on the afternoon when you turn up - this is to ensure people who sign up turn up).

Important notes:

This meetup is about getting together musicians within the meetup. It will have bumps and wrinkles - please bear that in mind. It's all about providing a friendly environment to play, learn, and make mistakes without worrying about itIf you sign up and we accept you, please ensure you attend. If you RSVP 'yes', you will go onto the waiting list straightaway; I will then add people to the meetup attendees based on the formula outlined above.

You will be required to provide your full name for the security desk at the BMA. All members will need to bring their instruments. There is a full PA system, but guitarists will need to bring their amps, and anyone wanting to play keys will need to bring their keyboard. There will be a set of drums available.

Thanks to everyone for coming along - especially to Dee, who gave some really helpful advise to people like me with their jazz 'L plates' on. If people have ideas about how/where we could do more such things through the meetup, then do share them.

Thanks also to Michele for playing drums with an injured shoulder - beyond the call of duty, etc....

Hi Im a flautist and am interested in coming along. Would that be ok?

    March 8, 2014

    • Rob M.

Sarah - I'm afraid - due to the need to give the names of attendees to the security in the building before Friday - it's too late now. However, we're aiming to do more of these through the meetup, once we establish the right process to do so, so keep your eyes open.

Please note - PER EARLIER EMAIL - Please to confirm full name and/or car registration to Martin Kelmanson by END OR THURSDAY so that he can give them to BMA security.

If he doesn't have them, you won't get in!! Plus, if anyone changes their minds, please note there are members who are able to take up places potentially, so please advise.

    MAR and YR
I know it's last minute but are you interested in trying to arrange a mini jam session somewhere?

    March 2, 2014

    • Rob M.

Guys - keep an eye on things here, there may be changes if other people don't confirm. But, with limited space and PA access etc. I have had to make some cut-offs

      March 2, 2014

  • Rob M.

Note - to MAR, AJ, and YR, due to the need to keep numbers manageable for space and H&S reasons, to keep the balance of instruments right and to prioritise those members who have paid or who signed up first, I've reluctantly removed you from the participation list for this session. In future, if we can get more of these things sorted out, you will obviously be invited to join

Yes we do, I have a colleague who is a rock/blues drummer who is willing to stand in but if you are a jazz drummer then you'll be welcome. What have you done as a drummer?

    February 23, 2014

    • Michele M.

Hi, thanks for reply. I don't know exactly what u mean for jazz drummer but I can play some standards swing, bossa, bajao, Tumbao clave, acid funk, fusion etc. and I can play sone blues or rock as well. I try to be versatile as a drummer. Let me know . Mike

  • Rob M.

Hi - will update members shortly about where we are with things and what is needed from members. As for proposed tunes to work around, suggestion is that we now go for BLUE BOSSA and STOLEN MOMENT, with perhaps Blue Monk as a back-up. These are both in the REAL BOOK, which is generally the easiest way to ensure that everyone's working to the same page.

More soon. The only instrument we're lacking is a drummer, but Martin may have a drummer friend who can deputise.

    February 16, 2014

    • Rob M.

Martin - no, well, I only have the bass clef version. We'll need C and Bb versions won't we. I'll send an email out shortly to people attending, asking if they can supply .pdfs of the real book sheets - I imagine Dee might be able to help.

But with potentially 4 pianists maybe we need 2?

Hi Rob...I am learning jazz piano and have a not fantastic electric keyboard I can bring - I'll look at the information in more detail tomorrow - I'm busy preparing a presentation at the moment and was just taking a break checking e-mails.

I was thinking about Blue Bossa, Lester Leaps in and Blue Train? Some different rhythms and styles. What do you think? I've got charts for these somewhere.
