[Free gig] Student Jazz Ensembles @ Royal Academy of Music, Marylebone

  • Feb 20, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

There are six of these sessions:

Tuesday 11th February 6.00pm. First-year and third-year jazz ensembles perform.

Tuesday 18th February 6.00pm. Second-year and fourth-year jazz ensembles perform.

Thursday 20th February 6.00pm. Postgraduate jazz ensembles perform.

Thursday 20th March 6.00pm. First-year and third-year jazz ensembles perform.

Tuesday 25th March 6.00pm. Second-year and fourth-year jazz ensembles perform.

Thursday 27th March 6.00pm. Postgraduate jazz ensembles perform.

There is a wide variety of music performed some are original student works and all styles are performed.  Some of the avant garde sets won't be to everyone's taste.  Two bands each play a set with an interval in between and it is an idea to enquire on the students what is being played.  I sometimes leave after the first set.  I won't be able to attend all.  If I'm there I have a sign so maybe other attendees could informally host. I used to make these gigs more formal and reserve seats but there were too many no shows so turn up 15 mins before to get a seat.  Durations are approximate.  After the gig there is a large Wetherspoons next to Baker St Tube which has a good selection of beer and wine!

All dates: Free, no tickets required

The second set was more to my taste. Good guitar work and nice to see a violin in a jazz context

I did warn people about the Avant Garde and last evening was one of the most "Avant" I've heard there. One of my guests even left at the interval and missed out on a very enjoyable second set. Pity attendance was so poor. I am implementing no shows for these so please be aware for future events!

Two very different sets. First one very avant garde so wasn't for everyone but the second one with Drake covers very pleasing and well executed.

The first set was very avant garde, the second very nice indeed. A lot of people left during and after the first set!

Always interesting to hear what Academy expects of its students. Free jazz from 2nd year post-grads in the first set was challenging, but 1st year post-grads offerings in the second half was superb - Nick Smart's arrangements of some Nick Cave classic songs.
