Re: [lsug] Scala Dojo times

We had this problem in the LJC - many people wanted to kick off at 7, others at 6, so we solved it by having informal networking at 6, then 3-4 lightning talks at 6:30. They have gone down excellently and it's a great chance to get new speakers to show what they've been working on and try speaking in front of an audience without the pressure of being the main event.

We have had lots of things covered from 'bug of the week' and book reviews, to presentations on frameworks and even concurrency in 7 minutes.

If anyone does feel like doing it I would recommend reading through this document that we put together specifically for people giving lightning talks: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ym0t2kww1mWhXrhna6jg9DUD4Lbhg2-4QM7gyLYFhno/edit?hl=en&authkey=CPGL8L4E#

Also read through these two posts too:

Great post on presentation side/nerves when presenting in IT - http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2007/04/30/how_to_not_throw_up.html
Great on how to prepare lightning talk specific content - http://www.perl.com/pub/2004/07/30/lightningtalk.html

One big mistake many people make is fancy slides on a dark background - we put together this as a template: http://files.meetup.com/841735/Sample%20template.ppt I'm sure it would be easy to create a similar LSUG slide.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Barry

Hello all,
I was thinking if some people can make it for 6pm we could do a mini-workshop or scala environment check before the pizza gets there at 6.30pm.  Or even a lightning talk or just someone showing off something cool, so we can talk about it when the pizza arrives?

If you have any problems or questions about Scala we could try and figure things out together.  This would give those of us who are more local an opportunity to do something constructive without loosing those that work further a field.

Does that sound interesting?

Sorry for the late reply, I've just got back from Germany.
Thanks
John.
