Saturday events sound very good to me. it gives you plenty of time to set up something meaningful

Akka comes to mind like a good theme for a first event. the question is where?

Hippy New Year ,

Just like all well run groups, we could start the new year by thanking everybody who has helped in the past year. So big thanks to everybody who has given a talk (all thirteen of you), Pawel for taking over and doing an excellent job of the Dojo and finally James for doing all the hard work at SkillsMatters.

New Year, New Ideas

It's almost traditional at this time of year to think about the past year and the next so now would be a good time to think on what you like/dislike/want to add to the Scala UG. We have been holding speaker talks and a dojo for about 2 years now but that does not mean that we cannot add more things or do different things. A couple of things that I've been asked about etc are:

- Weekend events, meeting up on a Saturday or Sunday and doing something more in-depth than then the normal 90 mins in an evening. Maybe a day hacking Akka or Lift

- Jobs postings - how do people feel about job board, either 'i'm looking' or 'job available'. Should this be on the google groups list or create a separate group/web?

- Social evenings (ie just pub nights)

What do you think? Other ideas?, Do you want to organise something (remember the Dojo was not my idea and I don't organise it), and would very much like to spread the events to as wide a group as possible.

This is not to say that we are not still looking for people to so talks for the monthly evening sessions. Do you have a cool project that you want to tell everybody about?, do you want to give a 'how we use Scala' talk?. If you don't think you can do a whole event then maybe we can combine two or three into one evening.

Our first event is in about 2 weeks and on ScalaMock with Paul and the Dojo the following day, hope you can come.

ScalaDays 2012

For anyone who is unsure of what ScalaDays is then its the worldwide conference for the Scala (bit like JavaOne for Scala) with most of Typesafe and the EPFL team attending. In previous year it has been held at EPFL, Lausanne and Stanford Uni (both with videos of sessions) and this is the first that it outside a university setting at the Barbican (yep, the one in London). It's basically a two days Scala geek fest.

Full details and registration:

As a double incentive to get that ticket early, both previous years have been sold out and there is a 25% until 5th March.
