Hands-on session: Learning another discipline

Join us for a hands-on session where we highlight the power of our weaknesses as software journeymen by using software to lean non-software skills. We're going to learn the fundamentals of an entirely different domain by writing code to explore it.

Bring your laptop with your favourite development environment set up, including a test framework.

    Great concept for a session, definitely something to think about.

      Well the other way is to pass the definition of a scale into the test, then you have exhaustively tested the scale

      void pitchCanBeDerivedFromNoteName() {
      system = new MusicSystem(['C', 'D']);
      assertThat(system.getPitch('C'), equalTo(1))
      assertThat(system.getPitch('D'), equalTo(2))

      Its also worth noting that note names are not absolute, it really depends what key you are in, so pitch 2 could be C# or Db, 3 could be D or Ebb (double flat) etc.

    Despite Pedro's best efforts, I think I did learn a little bit about music on the way! ;)

    I really enjoyed it, I liked how hands on it was and the way in which he got his point across.

    Hi, can someone please help me with the name of the conference that was mentioned. I forgot what it was called. Thanks

    Here's our code-base, still needs refactoring and adding more unit tests, of course better design:

    Any constructive feedback is welcome.

    Thanks Pivatol and Goncalo for hosting us.

    Great. Was an excellent exercise where I didn't feel much pressure, maybe because I wasn't coding, but on the other hand we where trying to get the requirements right before and during the test being written. Looking forward to the next session :)

    what language are we going to be using?

    • John C.

      It'll be language agnostic (usual LSCC policy is to make these things so).

      Hi Ramchandhar. It's not unusual for 10-20 people to drop out, so hopefully you'll get a spot. I will make sure to send an email before the event asking people to give up their space if they can no longer make it.
