Faye: an Evented Server-Side App
With Node.js gaining in popularity, it's becoming easier than ever to write scalable web apps using tools we already know and understand. To really take advantage of this platform, you need to take an event-driven approach to constructing your applications: this makes them friendlier to your CPU, and has the added benefit of keeping your codebase maintainable.
In this talk I'll present Faye, an implementation of the Bayeux messaging protocol for Node and Ruby. You'll learn about how it works and the design patterns used to keep it fast and simple, and you'll also see some approaches to writing asynchronous tests for your apps that you'll actually be able to read in six months time.

An Open, End-to-End JavaScript Stack
JavaScript, an easy to approach yet challenging to master language, has won in the browser because it is everywhere. It's compelling approach for creating event-driven applications, combined with incredibly rapid invention in the open-source world, is leading to an incredible opportunity to redefine the stack.
Sometimes the complexity and quantity of choice is overwhelming, which unfortunately creates great opportunity for vendor lock-in due to the natural economic cycles of revolution, consolidation, and innovation.
Even most open source projects are difficult to leave once you've invested heavily in that approach, but JavaScript's incredibly flexible nature presents an opportunity to deliver a truly open stack with easily swappable components. I'll unveil our first steps at making this idea a reality for your application.
