Steve McQueen confirms his directorial prowess with this hugely important and beautifully cinematic account of slavery in pre-Civil War America.

12 YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

Enjoy is probably not the right word, but the cast gave a great performance. The film music captured the sombre story.

Hi Victor totally agree, unlike usual film viewing where you were watching a story being told, with this film you were living and involved with the story of the character ... Almost everyone around me was weeping at the end, and I have to admit there appeared to be a lot of precipitation on my face which I couldn't account for,...??

Hi Mike, the director showed the inhumanity of slavery in that era very vividly. They even held back from some of the scenes in the book. It's good that the film is shining a light on these stories. No doubt that there are more stories from different angles that are yet to be told. A very insightful film.
