Let's Meetup and Sci fi / fantasy Book club:

UPDATE!!: Because of strike action at SOAS on the 3rd December we will also be discussing December's Book 'Moses: The Chronicles of Harriet Tubman (Books 1 & 2)'. We will also be picking books/film/TV for the next 3 months at the end of the meeting so please come along with some suggestions.

The book we will be discussing in this meeting will be:

Walter Mosley's 47

Here on Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/qag8vm7

About the book:

A young slave boy is named and numbered 47 on a nineteenth-century Georgia plantation and encounters the brutality and injustice of the system of slavery.

47 meets a strange being named Tall John who appears to be another slave boy - a runaway. But as 47 comes to realise, John is an extraterrestrial visitor who believes that his destiny is intertwined with the young slave's.

Tall John is a science fiction creation but he is also a reinterpretation of High John the Conqueror - a character taken from old slave myths about a spirit come from Africa to confound the slave masters and (ultimately) to free all slaves.

About Motherships Connections Black Book Club:

This group is for those from those from the African and Caribbean Community based in the U.K with an interest in Speculative fiction, comics, digital technologies and all other aspects of "Geekdom".

Speculative fiction is an umbrella term for the Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Alternative History genres. However we also encourage Graphic novels, comics and general literature relating to science/ digital technologies and other arts if they include futuristic/speculative themes.

This is a book club for Black people but that does not mean we will only read Black authors! Black literature will be probably make up the majority of our reading lists but the book club is primarily a space to discuss how happenings in the wider world, for example NASA's explorations on Mars or the latest Science fiction blockbuster, can be seen through Black experiences and what effects these may have on Black intellectual life.
