Tis the last debate before Christmas, so we're going to have some fun!
We've all heard the myth (at least I hope it's a myth) of the ancient Mayan calendar which tells us the world will end on 21 December 2012. Similarly, just days ago, Cambridge University announced its plan to open The Centre for the study of External Risk - designed to explore what it deems to be the four biggest threats to humanity in the near future: climate change, nuclear Armageddon, rogue bio-technology, and artificial intelligence.
So, we will ask five speakers to sit on our very special panel, and assign each of them a blockbuster movie that represents one of the above end of world scenarios. Their job will be to convince you that their apocalypse is the one that is most likely to come true.
The movies we have chosen are:
1) 2012 - Mayan Apocalypse (obviously)
2) Dr Strangelove - Nuclear Armageddon
3) Resident Evil - Rogue Biotechnology
4) Day After Tomorrow - Climate Change
5) The Matrix - Artificial Intelligence
Admission to this debate is free. However, we do ask that you help us show our gratitude to our hosts, the Old cock Tavern by buying a drink from the bar and not bringing in any food or drink of your own from outside.
We look forward to seeing you all - hopefully not for the last time!
