Monthly Reading Meetup 20th May - Queen's Jubilee

For the next reading group the text will be about the Queen's Jubilee regatta beautifully described by the journalist Matthew Engel and translated into Chinese.

The chinese text is here
PDF with pinyin and translations here.

There are flash cards to test your ability to translate characters here.  And another one which tests your ability to visualize the characters from the pinyin here.

Mp3 recording here - thanks again to XiaoMin for recording this.

The English text is here
mp3 recording in English here

For this meetup, we have booked the room upstairs in the pub so it should be sigificantly quieter.  We will therefore will need to cover the cost (£20) which we will simply share by everyone who comes paying a contribution to make up that cost.

For those learners of Chinese who have not used Anki before, do the following:

1) Go to http://ankisrs.net/ and click on the "Download" button

2) Install it on your computer

3) Go to https://ankiweb.net/ and create a user account (it is free)

4) Open Anki on your computer

5) Click on the button <Create Deck>

6) Give the deck a name (e.g Jubilee)

7) When it appears in the list of decks, click on the link, it will take you to an empty deck

8) Then click on the <Decks> button, it should take you back to the initial screen with your new deck selected

9) Download the oneof the Anki flashcard sets I posted above, and save them to somewhere  you can find on your computer

10) Go to the <File> menu, and choose import

11) Select the file you downloaded

12) It will then import these cards to your "Jubilee" deck

13) Now if you click on the link to your deck, you should be able to drill yourself on the words

14) If you also want to be able to do so on your mobile phone (android - free, iphone - slightly expensive), download the anki app to your phone, run it, and then choose "synchronize" - that way, all the cards in your deck will get transferred to your phone.

(Might be a good idea to create a new deck if you want to import the other deck of cards - in which case go back to point (5) and do the same thing with the other deck).

    Hi Steve!
Thanks for sorting this out. Will we be coming to the meet up with our own translation?

    May 16, 2013

George - typically the format is to read - alternating between chinese and english in order to help learners of both languages. Then we challenge each other to make translations of sentences (ideally made more simple) to the rest of the group. Finally we discuss the content.
