Badminton holiday in Indonesia

Professional badminton club “Tangkas”, located in West Jakarta, Indonesia.

6 – 20 July (dates to be confirmed)

How much?
Total approximate cost: £1300 for 2 weeks including flights, coaching and accommodation.

Can I join?
Any intermediate/advanced/league players who want to improve their level considerably in a short period of time and to enjoy an exotic holiday in the world leading badminton country are welcome to join.

What is the coaching and training like?
Mr Hendry Saputo – one of the most famous coaches in Indonesia, who raised World and Olympic champions, like Lyliana Nastir, Simon Santoso, Jonathan Christie. Mr Hendry is supported by assistant coaches and Nikita Kolomnin (myself), ex professional player and level Level 2 UKBA coach.  I visited the camp in January 2014 to progress my badminton and improve my fitness in and now I am helping other UK based players to share this amazing experience with me in July.

Training program prepared by Mr Hendro himself, is tailored to group’s needs and abilities and consists of a combination of drills, endurance training, agility training, badminton specific gym training, shot practice and games. Singles and doubles training is available. On a normal day a group would have 2 sessions per day, sessions starting at 8am and 3pm and lasting from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

Players should be prepared to sustain rather hard training routine but enough time is given to adapt to the weather and recover after each session.

What is the venue like?
Tangkas purpose build 9 badminton court facility is part of a leisure centre located in a respectable secured area. The facilities include 50 meters open swimming pool, gym, 2 tennis courts, table tennis, squash courts (if you have enough energy to care about other sports that is ). There is a café on the site. All facilities are free to use.

The weather in July is sunny and hot which contributes to your stamina and endurance training. It takes a bit of time to get used to training in such conditions but when you come back to the UK you feel like you have a third lung added!

Players should take sufficient number of t-shirts and shirts as you might change 2-3 garments per session. Full laundry service is provided and your clean cloths are returned to you 3 times per week. If gym training follows a session, all players are required to change into dry cloths before being admitted to gym.

A choice of clean air-conditioned single/double accommodation is being offered within less than 5 minutes drive from the venue. Air-conditioned van is provided to take players to and from accommodation.

Apart from abundance of local foods (Chinese, Thai, Singapore, Indonesian) there are a lot of cafes offering steaks, fish, burgers and other European foods. Prices range from 50p in a local food café to £7 per 3 course steak dinner. It is advised to drinking only bottled water and not to consume ice at restaurants because it might have been prepared from tap water. I never had any food or water contamination.

Extra details
Extra badminton cloths could be purchased on site at £5 per garment. Express stringing service is provided.

Badminton specific sports massage is available at the venue at the equivalent of £2-3 per and is very useful to recover your strained muscles.

You can take sunbaths by the pool, which is very nice!

Insurance and vaccination
Players are advised to take care of their own travel insurance. Although there are no specific requirements to vaccinations, players are advised to check with their GP. I did not take any jabs before I went.

Cost breakdown:
Airplane ticket: currently £500 return from London Gatwick by Emirates with a layover in Dubai. Emirates is one of the best airlines on the world and despite a long flight it is possible to sleep, eat and entertain yourself throughout the flight.

The prices are subject to change and can’t be controlled by the organisers, so players are advised not to delay with this matter and purchase their own ticket. Specific flight details will be distributed at a later stage.

Coaching + shuttles + use of leisure centre facilities + accommodation + transport + laundry ¬- £800.

Total: £1300

Deposit of £150 needs to be paid to organisers to secure a spot. Currently only 4 free spots left.  Application deadline – 28 February 2014.
