Philosophy open mic, quiz and social

After the success of the last philosophy open mic, quiz and social evening, we have decided to hold another.. This time, we have a range of speakers: four LPC members who have bravely volunteered to talk about topics that interest them and four non-LPC members from an academic background, talking about their PhD subjects..The talks chosen cover a broad range, from Buddhism, to Justice, via the art of Damien Hirst...

Each speaker will talk for 10 minutes and we will also have a philosophy quiz between speakers, suitable for all levels of philosophical knowledge. No need to come with a team, you can just join whoever is on your table.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Really brilliant - more of same would be great. Tend to agree with other comment that although the quizzes are good fun, this time could be spent discussing the speakers topics

very enjoyable. Surprised at low turnout. Very well organised. Perhaps having more of the quiz questions related to the topic would be even more enjoyable and help along discussion in our groups EG:
Which country(s) claim to have successfully introduced a ban on the Burqa?
    Which country has most Buddhists?

Maybe asking the speakers to provide a question(s) (of a factual nature?) could be useful?

Hi, are there any other spots available for speakers? And what kind of quiz is it? without giving anything away, is it questions like 'who said, 'i think, therefore i am''. that kind of thing???

Yes, just present yourself as ech'bma, there should be no problem. Yes, there is a charge. You have to drop me a summary of the discussion here. Happy debating. Do us proud. x

I'm going to talk about Nelson Goodman's 'New Riddle of Induction', which has puzzled and bothered me off and on since I came across it 45 years ago as an undergraduate. I'm a retired Home Office civil servant. Four years ago I did the first year of a philosophy masters at Birkbeck (but haven't yet finished the course).

Wonderful Godfrey. Will try to read up the topic. And hopefully ask you something clever!

Hi Harsh, it's very difficult to answer that one exactly I'm afraid: the venue seats around 40- in our experience of previous events often only around half the people who have said yes turn up. However, on some random occasions most people have turned up. It is frustratingly difficult to predict! So, I chose 50 (+the speakers who are not on the list) as that gives a little room for manoeuver and hopefully everyone who comes will get a seat.

    Dear all,
Will the space available at the event be strictly for 50 people or some more can join? And,I do not want to presume things, but what percentage of people are likely to not turn up. Any ideas?

We are as clever or smart as we have been exposed. I hope we all exercise some intellectual honesty in our discussion. Hey, it’s my first time attending the group’s events.

I am absolutely looking forward to it. Can we know the complete list of topics that are going to be spoken? Maybe we can better prepare ourselves then.

Hi Harsh, I will send out a complete list of the speakers and topics at least a week before the open mic.. We are still waiting for one person to confirm his topic! Best wishes,
