LPC reading group: Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy

For November's reading group meeting, we're reading Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy by Bernard Williams.  It's one of the most influential books of moral philosophy from the past 30 years.

Please read the book before coming to the meeting and RSVP 'yes' only if you'll attend.

Williams wrote widely: on ethics, Greek philosophy, moral psychology, personal identity, and many other subjects, and the book we've chosen is, probably, his most influential.  Williams criticizes the tendency towards the codification of ethics in theories such as utilitarianism; the book's themes also include realism in ethics and the possibility of ethical knowledge.

Here's a link to the book on Amazon (it should be widely available in bookshops, too):

THE FORMAT

The meetings themselves are informal, with an emphasis on thinking together and sharing thoughts about the works and issues they raise.  There aren't any presentations---just open discussion about the books.

As the numbers are limited (in order to keep the atmosphere more intimate), please only RSVP 'yes' if you're going to attend---it's important that people have time to read the book before the meeting.  If you're down to attend but won't be able to make it, then do please change your RSVP as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT NOTE. As demand for the reading group is high, if you RSVP 'yes' and then don't attend or tend to change your RSVP at the last minute, we'll move you to the bottom of the waiting list.  We're sorry to have to do this, but we want to give people who are likely to come the opportunity.

Great discussion - even though we all seemed a bit bemused by Williams's book. He doesn't believe there can be any overarching system of ethics, but there can be critical thinking within different ethical cultures. I think this view is reflected in the present reality - the piecemeal philosophizing we see everywhere, apparently unable to cross fundamental political, religious, etc. divides.

Very enjoyable. The book was tricky, but there was a lot of knowledge in the group that helped shed light and led to some interesting discussion.

    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of office today and have only just got access to a computer. It's a shame there weren't enough people saying they'd come to another meeting, but again, thanks to Phillipe for attempting it.

For the next meeting (after Christmas), I'll try and get the H&G for a time when both of the rooms there are available (if they're willing). If not, then there a couple of other options for venues I'm currently looking at. Some are likely to ask small payment for the space, but I'll try and go for somewhere free, and if not, it will be a reasonable minimum.

    Best,

    Rob

    Hi all,
Apologies Philippe: I didn't see your comment until today and I know Rob is very busy during the week, so neither of us had the chance to list the Maison don Felipe event as a separate meetup. I agree with you that this would have been a sensible way to do it though, in hindsight. Next time we will make sure that we set up another meetup (or two) at the very beginning so that as many people as possible get to attend. For this event we may just need to put it down to experience and go with the 20 we have.

A lot of people have cancelled today so people on the waiting list will have moved up- If anyone is not intending to come who does have a place, please do RSVP no so others can come.

Louise- I'm not sure where you are on the waiting list but I really hope you do move up get a chance to come.. A lot of people tend to pull out on the day so do keep an eye on it.. After slogging through the whole book (well I found it a slog anyway!) it is a shame if you don't get a chance to discuss it.

I'm not going to proceed with hosting this and have decided to cancel the venue - there are a max of five people interested in this based on the interactions below, and given that not all of those are certain to show, I don't wish to fall out of favor with the venue.

I'm sure not all of the 51 people waiting have signed to be informed of these notes, and so would know about the notes below. Hence the request for a listing yesterday.

I'm sure with a little further thought with the practicalities this could work as a option going forward, and I'm happy to help with this. It's disappointing but I'm sure there will be other opportunities to meet.

That's a shame you didn't get more responses. So is the only option now to hope that a space comes up for the Hoop and Grapes? I've struggled to the end of the book and it would be great to share my pain!

I intend to go to the Maison don Felipe session. Thanks for organising.

Message for Robert - could you please re-list the Waterloo gathering as a seperate event within your group and explain the event - I say this as I don't wish to have the embarrasing situation on Thursday of having reserved a space and only have a few show up...there is only one definate reply to my booking below. It's fairer on the venue this way too I think.
If there are not enough definate yeses to a re-listing I will call the venue and cancel the booking. P

I have booked Mason don Felipe on The Cut (No.53, SE1 8LF
) for the overflow/those on the waiting list. It's on the same side of the road as the Old Vic Theatre although almost facing the New Vic..a table is booked for 15 at 18.45 under the name Phil, although I understand that they will be able to facilitate more if more show up.
We will need to be finished discussions by 21.00 as the Spanish Guitarist starts playing about that time every night from memory...http://www.mesondonfelipe.com/

Count me in, please Philippe. I'll remove myself from the Hoop & Grapes waiting list.

Nice one Phillipe: hope it goes well!

The commentary by Moore that Robert linked for us in his email of the 6th is a life-saver for me. I'm trying to get across "Ethics" for the meeting - even writing notes on it, because I've got a library copy that I can't scribble on - but I'm not sure I can get that done in time. Williams's prose is so impossibly dense ... I'm not an admirer of the style. But I do respect the man's commitment to honesty and rationality. And looking at the last few pages, there seems to be gold at the end of the struggle to understand him.

Both venues good for me too.

Why don't I book the Waterloo bar and then if there's a further meet next month the NFT could be used as pubs will be impossible to book nxt month? I'll post the address after booking it, most likely details forwarded here tomorrow..P

This sounds great. I'd suggest that whoever decides to go to the meeting at the NT/Waterloo posts a message on here (as Joe et al. have done) and then remove him/herself from the waiting list. (That way it'll be obvious what the numbers are, and the waiting list for the H&G will stull function.)

Thanks very much to you all for working out another meeting --- I'm really pleased to see that's starting to happen.

Now I just have to read the book...

National Theatre or Waterloo both OK for me.

How about the National Theater? I've been for one other meetup there. It's a central location. They have lots of spaces for people to meet, eat and drink. You don't need to pre-book to use the foyer and other lounge spaces. I think a group of 20 or 30 would fit in quite easily either in the Terrace Bar or in the lounge below.

I do know of such a bar near Waterloo station - that's quite accessable for most. They have a sizable space that could be cornered off for 20-30. Let me know by return if this might be suitable and I can speak with the Manager there who I know. P

    Hi all,

It looks as though the other room in the H&G is booked up for 15th November. But we'd really like to hold at least one, possibly two, other meetings to accommodate everyone who wants to come.

So---it would be great to have suggestions of pubs or other places in London that have a quiet room for free where we could have a discussion.

If you do know of places, feel free either to email me or post on here.

    Many thanks,

    Rob

As this meeting is also at the Hoop & Grapes could a similar arrangment be made to the one on Tuesday 16th with "Fear and Trembling"?

    October 12

    • Rob

I'm going to ask the H&G on Tuesday (at the 'Fear and Trembling' meeting). If their other room is available on Nov. 15th, then I'll try and book it and then post here. If not, then Dan and Luis have started the ball rolling to arrange some other location.

I think Rob and I both replied to this at the same time with the same idea..

  • Sara Northey

    Hello everyone,

In response to Joe's comment about potentially organising an 'extra meeting' at the Hoop and Grapes on the same night, as we are doing this month, yes that is certainly a possibility..

I was planning to see how it goes having two meetings at once next Tuesday and decide after that. If all goes well and if the Hoop and Grapes are able to give us the other room again, I will post an 'extra meetup' next Wednesday morning.

(If we decide not to go ahead with it, or if the room is not available , I will also let people know though).

I hope that is ok with you all: obviously, if someone wants to organise something else in the meantime, or facilitate an extra group anyway, that's absolutely fine too. We have enough people on the waiting list to fill two extra groups at the moment..

    Best wishes,
    Sara

Any folks on the waiting list fancy getting togetherat another location?? I've just moved to London so I can't offer any suggestions. Cheers! Dan x

Yes, I'd be fine with another location and would attend.

great! Any suggestions? I guess somewhere fairly central would be appropriate.
