Angie Hobbs is professor of the public understanding of philosophy at Sheffield University, a frequent broadcaster on BBC Radio 4, and one of the best-known philosophers in the UK. In her first talk at the London Philosophy Club, Angie will present her vision for the future of philosophy, which involves a return to the ancient Greeks' conception of philosophy as an aid towards flourishing lives and flourishing communities.
This meeting is at a new venue for us - the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, which is a popular venue for arts organisations like the Ministry of Stories, with a big capacity...and a bar! Entry will be £2, to cover the cost of venue hire. Please arrive at 7pm. The venue's website is here. It's near Bethnal Green tube. Seeing as its a nice bar, we might as well make this a bit of an Xmas social too, so there'll be plenty of time for socialising and carousing afterwards.
Here's an appearance by Angie on Philosophy Bites, talking about Platonic love.
Here's an appearance by her on Woman's Hour, talking about why philosophy matters.
Here's an appearance by her on In Our Time, discussing neoplatonism.
And here's a video on the future of philosophy in which she appears, along with members of the LPC (if the YouTube embed hasn't worked, here's the link).
See you there hopefully,
LPC

i cannot come because i am in pakistan but friends i will feel myself there with your cooperation(comments),Greek philosophy is a basis for modern world especially the Aristotle where science coincides with arts or Socrates and Plato combines their ideology with Aristotle, friends i think basis remains same but challenges are always dynamic, the most important thing which i like about Greek philosophy is it encourages creativity and satisfy human aesthetic values which are needed in todays world to eradicate prejudices and hatred,
i have explained which i felt, and i know i may be wrong, waiting for your comments friends

I'll be really sorry to miss this event. I'm already booked in to a discussion about education and happiness with Anthony Seldon, Geoff Mulgan and John Lloyd.
If you can't make it to Hackney but you're in central London at 7pm next Tuesday, you might want to check it out

Hi Jules and the LPC folk. Do you have any plans to maybe record your events for podcasting purposes? This sounds like a fantastic event, but I've got the same clash as Sophie. Keep up the good work! Cheers,
Paul
