Portrait Studio Lighting - Portrait 1

  • Jul 26, 2014 · 1:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

In this session we will cover in detail the practical build up of three styles of lighting set-ups and show you how you can make subtle adjustments to the lights to help you create photographs that stand out from the crowd.

You will learn how to create different and distinctive lighting setups including the flattering classic ‘Hollywood lighting’.

Everyone will have individual shooting time and receive full guidance and support from the tutors.  If you would like to further develop your understanding of studio lighting then do come along.

You will need to have studio experience to attend this session as this is about perfecting the light and not camera settings or posing a model. If you haven't attended any studio workshops then come along to the Introduction workshop first.

The workshop is approximately 3 hours in duration.

The Studio:

We'll be working in a spacious 800 square foot studio.

Our Kit:

We will be using 3 Bowen Gemini Pro 750Ws Monolights as well as light modifiers to experiment with. We have all of the equipment you will need so don't worry about flash triggers, just bring your camera.

What you will need:

An DSLR or similar camera with standard hot-shoe. If you have another type, you'll need to bring your own adaptor.

A suitable lens

Any standard lens will work; a 35 or 50mm, 17-55, 24-70 or 70-200.

A clean memory card

The model will be expecting to take away a copy of your images at the end of the session. You will need to shoot Jpeg or RAW with JPEG so please come with clean memory cards so we can download the images quickly.

The Details

We are limiting the numbers to six so everyone will have shooting time and have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session.  This studio session is more about controlling the light and less about camera settings &  the model, but the tutors will be there to help with any technical questions you may have. In each setup you will be required to either shoot, make changes to the lighting setups or give an opinion on the setup at each stage.

The Schedule

Introduction of the tutors, Model & members

Quick look at the studio equipment and supporting gear.

Quick summary of how the session will run

Build three lighting setups & shoot

Debrief

Hi to everyone who attended today, it was fantastic to meet you all.

I mentioned today that one of the photographers who inspired me when I started out on my journey of portrait photography was Damien Lovegrove. You can see a lot of his work on his web site and blog but for those who are interested here is a YouTube video of his highlights of 2013 - I think you will agree some simply beautiful images
