The Lighting Workshop - Lighting Basics

No location was chosen

This workshops will cover basic studio lighting techniques and terminology so you will have a basic understanding of how to use studio lighting.

The evening will be broken into two areas; theory and practical sessions with a live model.

We will cover:

The basic properties of light propagation:
Properties of light - Colour, hard and soft lighting
High and low key lighting
Use of different types of light modifiers (soft-boxes, snoots, reflectors etc.)

We will also be looking at the camera in relation to studio lighting, specifically:

Understanding Shutter Sync Speed
Understand the use of aperture
Understanding the use of ISO
Understanding White Balance

For the practice session we will look at a basic one light set up, a more advanced two light set up and we'll be experimenting with high and low-key lighting with our model.

The workshops will start from 6:00pm and go on to 9:00pm and as well as the theory and practical shooting exercises we aim to give you hands on experience of setting up and breaking down the lighting kit.

Our Kit:

We will be using the groups Bowens 750pro Travel pack with 2 Gemini Pro 750Ws Monolights as well as a multitude of light modifiers for you to experiment with. We have all of the ancillary equipment you will need in order to be able to use the kit, so don't worry about flash triggers; we'll supply those.

What you will need:

An SLR or similar camera with hot-shoe or sync lead socket.

You must be able to control the camera you bring manually, i.e. manually control the shutter speed, aperture, white balance and the ISO settings.

1 off Suitable lens

We're shooting in a relatively small space, so while any lens will work for you a 50mm lens or a standard zoom e.g. 24mm to 80mm will probably be best.

1 off clean memory card

The model will be expecting to take away your images at the end of the session, so please come with clean memory cards so we can download the images quickly.

It would also help if you had some ideas about the type of photographs you would like to come away with, so have a look through magazines, newspapers etc and bring some pictures with you that you like for inspiration.

You are expected to have a basic understanding of how your camera works! You need to be able to:

Change the ISO Settings
Change the white balance
Change the shutter speed
Change the aperture

If you don't know how to control these fundamentals on your camera, then get reading your camera operations booklet and get some practice in before you come along to the event.

If you arrive from Notting Hill Gate underground station, take exit B towards Portobello Road. Turn right on the corner which is Pembridge Villas, take the first left on Portobello Road, turn right on Denbigh Terrace. Go straight ahead and you'll run into Denbigh Road cross over and you'll see the archway ahead of you across the road towards the left. The hall is the second building inside number 5 on the first floor. Map
