Speedlites with Quoc Huy

Quoc Huy will be running this session on Speedlites.

Many of you may know Huy's work as he has been published in multiple magazines from Practical Photography to Eye Spy magazine where he very recently had the cover spread. Huy is a portrait photography expert and with his attention to light, detail, composition and skill his portraits take on a new dimension. Lighting is key to Huy's work and if you haven't seen what he does take a look at www.qhphotography.com or www.quoc-huy.com. Huy is very talented in the use of Speedlites and all types of flash and what you can't learn from him just isn't worth knowing.

So if you're ready to get to grips with your Speedlite and you're looking to learn to use flash both on and off the camera this FotoGym is designed for you. Speedlites is not specific to any particular make or model so it doesn't matter if you use Nikon, Canon, Metz or any other brand you'll learn a lot from this session.

The session will include:
9.30-10.00 Coffee or tea (optional)
10.00-10.15 Introduction and info regarding flash types
10:15-10.45 Theory

  • Using the speedlite mounted on the camera using TTL.
  • How the speedlite works wirelessly off the camera using TTL (plus multi flash setup)
  • Using custom white balance
  • Understanding when to use manual mode and TTL modes
  • Using Manual mode

10:45-11:45 Demonstration with a live model:

  • Shoot using on camera flash
  • Shoot 1 flash off camera
  • Shoot 2 flash off camera

Practical: 11.45-1.15

  • Time to do some shooting!
  • There will be a number of live models to work with.
  • 1:1 hands on help, tips and advice.

Critique: Shots in by 1.30 at the latest please for a critique with the best shot winning free entry to a FotoGym of their choice.

Bring your cameras, flash heads, triggers, receivers and any accessories; softboxes, reflectors, snoots, gobo's etc you may have. We'd like have enough kit available for people to try out so if you have it, bring it.

TTL confuses me a lot. I feel I have no control. This class is exactly what I need. I hope there will be a few words on diffusers. I also hope that I could answer the following question myself someday.
Do strobists hate "natural-lighting" photographers or envy them (especially the Leica toting ones)?

just out of curiosity, will it be about Canon or Nikon Speed light?
Or off camera flash in general?

To be honest I haven't got a clue about speedlites- so that means that I'll really learn something this time. But I haven't got any equipment apart from my camera yet- is this going to be a problem? XX Katja

It's only going to be a problem if you're expecting to participate in the practical session, Katja. If you can't bring a flash with you then you'll not get much out of the session unless you can borrow one and I would think it quite unlikely that anyone will have a spare flash. I would try try to arrange to borrow one before you come along if I was you.

What camera do you have? You could always pair up with someone with the same camera (esp if you have a Canon) and I'm sure you will get as much out of it that way. I'd be happy to share if you have a Canon

Karen thanks, it's really lovely of you to offer. Yes, I have a Canon and actually have found someone that is willing to lend me one speedlite, she is also going to let me use some stands to mount them on with diffusers, I would be very happy though to compare the equipment that we have and to share and combine? See u there! x Katja

KiranGosu - I can't speak for the organisers but I think most people will be bringing a 1 light set-up and if not then we'll share.

I am happy to report that I'm a total techno-tart so I can bring soft-boxes, beauty dishes, umbrellas, reflectors - all on stands - I'll label it all so if you want to try it out you'd be welcome

As Katja said - we'll share and combine

    Hi all,

It's very exciting to see the energy and the will to share in this group.
I hope you'll enjoy the event.

This one will be different from what I've done in the past for the group. I will be mainly discussing the use of TTL where as in the past I've only discussed the manual mode.

As a Nikon shooter, I'll be demonstrating with Nikon CLS/AWL (Nikon's wireless flash system) but the theory applies to Canon's flash system with the use of the ST-E2 IR transmitter.

    Quoc-Huy

If you own a ST-E2 or are lucky to have the Pocket Wizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 or RadioPopper PX, bring them along!

To answer James Leung questions, Strobists don't hate nor envy "natural-lighting" photographers. They add flash light to the natural light either to complement it or replace it. And learning Strobist's techniques will give you the ability to choose and adapt.

Karen, if the offer of shared kit is on, (i.e. Katja has found someone to share some kit with) I'd really really like to take you up. I am bringing a guest along, and currently we have a camera each but only one EX530 + ebay trigger kit between us. At the moment I'm looking at picking up some pocket wizards so if anyone could let me at a set even for just a short time I'd really appreciate it.

Really looking forward to this guys, we're a strong group together and can't wait to get started.

Huy was an excellent speaker and teacher. There were quite a few models and everyone had a lot of opportunity to practice shooting different set ups. A really great event.
  • Greg Jones
Another good session, passionate presenter and the practice session was great (my first time having models to shoot other than the cats!) Only negatives would be the audio (I know I'm not going to be the first / last to mention it) and it might have been an idea to have an organiser for each sub-group as it did all get to be a bit of a bun-fight at times
  • Martincphotos
Thoroughly enjoyable and a lot of fun, and for those that stayed behind afterwards plenty of additional time to practice. A big thanks to Huy, the models (I worked with Ursula, Emily and Stuart) and Alex for organising. See you all at the next one :-)
  • Kim Byrne
This was the first meeting I've attended and thought it was very informative.
  • Nicola
I wasn't able to stay for the practical work, but the talk was absolutely excellent. Continual sound problems were pretty distracting and lots of people around me ended up chatting because they couldn't hear, which was quite frustrating
  • Katja Heber
I thought your talk was excellent Quoc but I thought there should have been a short break at some point to allow people to go to the toilet and a breather. I hung on till you finished your presentation and found I had missed the 'being divided into groups. Furthermore, I believe there were too many people and too few models and I think we should have been introduced to the models at the beginning as I didn't even got to see some of them. I also only managed to use the equipment I brought myself only once, that was before anybody else was set up and after that I had trouble getting a shot in with any equipment apart from on-camera flash. I really would have liked to use some other places in the building as well rather than only the little alley at the back of the building. All in all it was very informative so, people were friendly, I learnt a lot and I like some of the shots I have taken and for £10 it was simply excellent.
  • Minna
    Informative & entertaining. Great venue!
  • Paul
Excellent. Quoc presented well and concisely - the practical was really good and I'd like to also thank those who shared their experience/knowledge during the sessions.

Great day cannot fault the meetup at all.

To date this is the most organised meet up group I have attended, thank you to all the people who put so much work in behind the scenes. The actual event was superb the amount of knowledge imparted was exceptional and never having used my speedlight I left feeling confident that I could now use it with some degree of accuracy.

A really useful practical session, I learned lots! Thanks to Huy for a clear, informative talk and all your help.

This was excellent and inspiring, I learnt a lot both from Quoc's presentation (which must have taken a lot of work to prepare) and the sessions with the workshops and talking to others as well: a few pennies dropped for me, so I was so so pleased! I'm new to photography and it's an excellent way to learn. Feedback, especially Quoc's from the uploaded photos is really, really useful. Thank you for organising this!
  • karen
The workshop element was great, informative, well presented and well organised The practical session would have been better with more models
  • Sheina
At last, some sound tips from someone who obviously knows his stuff! Things have finally fallen into place and I feel I have a sound foundation on which to work on. I no longer fear the flash!!!
  • Richie S
Still the problems with the sound, maybe should try the headmic instead attached to the wireless microphone system :)
