Fotogym Off Camera Flash Photography with Huy and Friends

This location is shown only to members

We've all have encountered situations where natural light only does not allow
us to take the picture we'd like to get. We then have tried our camera popup flash
or even stick a proper flashgun on the camera, but the result was such that we've just
gave up and go for available light. This fotogym will teach you the basis of the off camera
flash photography and help you to understand the flashgun, a great accessory that
will be your own portable available light that you can choose to use whenever you lack of good one.

The session will be run by Huy with the help of 5 other photographers: Ritz, Rams, Masood, Paulo and Jonathan.
10:00 - 11:00 breakfast
11:00 - 12:00 about 1 hour talk about flash photography
12:00 - 12:15 preparation of the rooms (everyone is going to participate as this is part of a real life situation)
12:15 - 13:45 indoor flash workshop
13:45 - 15:15 outdoor flash workshop
15:30 - 16:15 lunch
16:15 - 17:00 showcase of pictures taken

Please can you let me know if a space becomes available on this photogym. I have replied no but that's only because it's full already. Cheers, Nikki

    Hi all,
It's amazing that thuis meetup is already full.

It would be interesting for us to know, among those that will be present to the fotogym:
    - who has experience in flash photography and your level.
    - what are you expecting from the fotogym
    - is there something specific in flash photography you would like to be discussed

Please answer this in our LPMG's forum:

Hi. I've found the following guide about Flash for Canon EOS cameras:

    http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

Not to take anything off you guys, but I thought canon users can use it to understand their Flash system a bit better before coming to the session.

If you are willing to learn, I do advise you to visit this page:
    http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html

This is where all of us have learned flash photography and how to light your pictures better. The "Lighting 101" is a free online course. You can read it only or go thru the whole blog since the beginning (like I did...) and I guarantee that you will improve your work in few months only. All for free! This will give you some basis before the fotogym.

I'm really looking forward for tomorrow but I have a question. Well, two actually. Do I need to take a ticket print? I noticed the option above but problem is I don't have printer at home and I'm off from work today. Other thing: do I need to have a flash gun for this event? I'm still looking for the best to buy at moment so all I have in the good old in built flash. If anyone knows cheers!

    Hi Suzy,
You don't need a ticket. What you will need is to secure a place on the RSVP system, which you have ;o)
Do you NEED a flash gun for the event? You won't, but if you have one bring it along. I'll be taking a couple of spares with me on a first come first served basis.

I'm glad you all enjoyed it as much as I did. If you want more information about flash synchronisation and your shutter, then you might find this article useful

Thanks for your comments about our presentation.
I'm glad you all enjoyed it as much as we did putting it together for you.

We'll definately be working towards another one in the near future.

Look forward to seeing you all again.

The bar by which I measure the success of an event just keeps going up and up. Huy and friends organised not just a power-point presentation outlining some of the basics of flash photography, but then managed three separate workshops to back up the theory with some practical experience. I learned that my camera / flash combo offered functional that I didn't even know existed. I can't even begin to offer a value on the amount of creativity and passion that these guys have for their art and the session proved to enthuse me too. A truly awesome event and I hope we can run it again before too long.

Very informative and yet relaxed. You could tell from the expressions on the audience that everyone was engrossed with the information they were being given. The speakers kept it light hearted and yet gave a wealth of valuable knowledge. A superb event.

Great chance to get out there and put the theory into practice. Shame most of my DIY fell appart, but a good excuse to make new gear. Thanks for the hard work, advice and many little tips and links that have opened a lot of doors! R.

Lecture was to basic for me personally. Had very little hands on time, spent most of my time waiting for equipment and demonstrators to be available.

Really interesting. I got a lot of ideas that I want to try. Definitely, I will be using my flash a lot more.

Well done to the organisers - this was a cracking session - would have loved to pratise a bit more but it is understantable as we had to share wireless triggers. Learnt a lot and can't wait to do creative shots now.
  • daniele
thanks guys! was a spin of crativity!

Very good presentation by Huy and friends. They had obviously spent considerable time preparing the session. Learned lots and wanting to put into practice new skills. The practical section was a bit rushed but with a lot of people that was probably inevitable. Nevertheless, well done to the organisers for putting on a very useful event.

I had a great day, I have had so many of my questions answered, and the piratical hands on instruction was great. Well done to Huy and all his friends for a wonderful day, we should do it again sometime soon.
