Westbourne Grove Church (map)

Selected By: Alex Laberge

Charlie Waite
Charlie Waite is one of the most outstanding landscape photographers of our time and we are pleased to announce that he will be our key speaker for the 2009 annual workshop.
Over the last twenty years, Charlie Waite has lectured throughout the UK and Europe. He is revered as a leading figure in the global renaissance of landscape photography, with past exhibitions held in London, Tokyo, New York and Melbourne. Charlie Waite's landscape photography style is unique in that his photographs convey a spiritual quality of serenity and calm.

He also runs a company 'Light and Land' organising photographic holidays, tours and workshops. If you haven’t seen his work here is a link to his gallery:

Speakers
Off Camera Flash photography
After last years "Off-camera flash photography" fotogym by Huy and friends, a lot of the LPMG members have asked for a second one as the places available at the origional workshop was limited. These members of the London Strobist group showed us what can be achieved by the use of small portable flash used off-camera.

This year, to answer to your request for another session, the group is going to reiterate with an "Off-camera flash photography" seminar during the annual workshop. They will guide you around the basis of the off-camera flash photography and help you to understand and use a flash gun to its best making it your own portable and available light to complement/replace natural light whenever needed. Learn to use this great piece of gear (that is often used improperly) to produce a range of shots which can both mimic natural light and offer you a range of creative effects. This talk will show you a variety of methods anyone can use in the home/studio or on location to produce stunning results. Also by utilising items found at home to build simple accessories which will aid you in the quest for the perfect image. The seminar will be illustrated by a live demo featuring different lighting scenarios.

I am wondering what are the timings of this event? The page says 11am, but the Google Calendar event says 3-4 pm... how long is the event, and does it include all of the above sessions (or do you have to choose one)?

Thanks, Alex. What time does it finish? I got an email asking whether I was staying for food, but I don't know when that would be (eg lunch or dinner) so can't say without knowing.

There is no direct link between PayPal and the Meetup site; the Meetup link above directs you to PayPal, but there's no feedback from PayPal to Meetup. If you've got a receipt from PayPal then we'll have a receipt detailing your payment too, so don't worry.

We haven't booked anywhere for lunch as there is only an hour inbetween speakers and so we don't have the time for everyone to order and get food in time. There are a variety of restaurants within easy walking distance of the workshop venue so members can choose what they would like to eat.

Hi from New Caledonia. I so wished I were with you guys. But family is above all. Thanks for Rams, Masood and Paulo to have taken the presentation on your own. I've missed Charlie and Chris... hope they will do something again.

Any chance we could get access to the slides from the Strobists? There was a lot to take in & I couldn't write down fast enough.

    Hi Miko et al.

We used the slides to remind us about the topics. Not really useful to anyone wishing to learn. Additionally, you've got to get out there and practice ! We will be at the next Cheeky One if anyone is interested in a demo or has any questions. There is a fair bit to learn but start slowly and you'll soon be getting amazing results and working with ease.

Thanks to everyone for giving up their time and expertise and helping to make the 2009 workshop a great day. Charlie Waite was special and I enjoyed listening to him immensely. Thanks to Chris Sargent for his informative and humorous talk on contest and stock images - to Rams, Pablo and Masson for sharing their knowledge and skill in using off camera flash. Thanks to Pete for driving up from Oxfordshire just to film the event and then drive straight back to go to work. And thanks too to Tom for all the work he puts in to all our events. And lets not forget to thank little Dorothy for being such a good girl and for entertaining so many of us...!

Chris's opening talk that was informative and inspirational. Thanks for your generosity in sparing the time to offer your insights to all of the rest of us mere mortals. The 'Flash Crew', even with some technical challenges due entirely to the electronically noisy environment they where working in, pulled off a live demonstration that offered a great deal of thought provoking information. This is the second time I've seen these guys at work and it's a hope of mine that we get the opportunity to see them in action again. These guys are amazing. Charley Waite gave us a presentation that I thought was going to bring the house down. His initial monologue revolved around the mindset he aims to pursue when working his particular brand of magic and combined with an overview of some of his work with an awe inspiring presentation was a joy to behold. Finally my thanks to Alex for working so hard behind the scenes putting this together and making the LPMG look so good.

I only managed to catch the stock photography and off camera flash talks, but those alone were more than worth the price of the event. It's one thing to read advise online and in the mags but talking to and hearing first hand experience was worth it. Thanks to the strobist guys I just saved a heap of cash by investing in new lighting set ups for my photos :)
  • Michael Preston
Brilliant; Inspirational; Fantastic. The speakers were great, the flash demonstration was useful and instructional, (as well as slightly amusing) and I had a great day. Big thanks to Alex and all the other organisers for their hard work.
  • Charles C

I'm a convert to landscape photography after a fab talk by Charlie Waite! Off-camera flash people were brilliant too! They really knew their stuff and were able to improvise at the drop of a hat.
  • Miko
great mix of practical know-how and inspiration!

Excellently organised. Westbourne Grove Church is an excellent venue, easily accessible and plenty of good options for lunch. Really enjoyed the mix of talks. Congratulations to the organisers.
  • David B
Suburb! Well organised and very interesting, I especially enjoyed Charlie Waite's emotive talk about his work. Chris' humourous presentation about his work was great and made me realise how much planning can go into a single shot. The flash demenstration was really informative and it worked well to see the results on the projector of the different flash set ups.
  • Paul W
All teh talks were worthwhile heraing...the first was humerous and informative, The seconfd on off-camera flash was pached with technical kow-how and Charlie was...excellent.
  • Louise

Excellent programme. Charlie Waite is charismatic and inspiring. All talks were informative, and gave plenty of ideas to put into practice. Very good day.
  • Chris Williams
The day was great. Chris was concise and to the point> He chose a subject that is alien to most people but his tips and advice were great thanks a lot Chris, Rams Pablo and Masson wonderful as always teaching us all their craft of off camera flash their presentation of this very exact and technical subject taught us to try and see what happens I am looking now for a cheap flash. Charlie Waite a amazing photographer and a great orator I will be cutting up a frame first thing in the morning. Well Done to Alex and Tom wow what a day perfect location perfect speakers and great passion shown by you both I want to lead the thanks from the whole group
  • John G
The off-camera flash managed to teach me new stuff even after another similar talk I'd been to recently (another meetup group), was sorry I missed Chris' stock photog talk after a busy morning with stuff I had to do 1st. Charlie was great, held the room captive with a clearly spoken (without a mic) well enunciated and interesting talk, then many fantastic photos, some of which really hit with an emotional response (as relating to one of his photography stories with an ironic ending).
  • Stephen
Well presented by all speakers. The Competition and Stock talk was inspiring, the Strobist guys provided lots of useful information and techniques, whilst Charlie Waite's made you want to jump on a plane and try to visit the countries that he has visited to attempt to capture his landscapes. Well done to the organisers for choosing the venue complete with a full complement of multimedia facilities too.
  • Miguel
    Fantastic content - professionally run
  • Paulo Rodrigues
Charlie was awesome and though I'm not big on landscapes everything he had to say was spot on for portraits too.

Excellent and informative! Charlie Waite did a great job and gave me a new appreciation - not just for landscape photography, but photography in general. A BIG thank you to the other guys as well, I actually have a new desire to overcome my fear of flash photography and competitions - Thanks also to the LPMG gang for bringing this all together
