We're having a party to celebrate the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale and emphasise that there's no contradiction between ethical eating and decadence!

There’ll be cake, obviously, and demos, including how to make
vegan cupcakes, elderflower-infused vegan custard, fruit & nut bars (token healthy sweet!)

Would you like to do a demo? Please contact [masked]

We'll collect voluntary donations for the community centre and have a raffle for charity. But it's not about the money. The idea is to  have delicious fun without spoiling the party for the rest of the planet.

What should you bring?  If you can make / bake a vegan teatime treat please bring it to share, and if not, even more reason to come along and learn! Please try to use local, organic and/or fairtrade ingredients where you can, it’s the icing on the ethical cake. It would be great if you could write down your recipe and ingredients to inspire others.

And please bring your own cup - we don't like disposables!

Thanks Siobhan, that's what I thought. The hire charge seems good value, but it's a bit too out-of-the-way.

I liked the venue once i was there but I didn't find it easy to find or get to! I wouldn't go in the dark, no! Sorry!

What did people think of the venue, was it easy to get to and did you think it was a safe neighbourhood (e.g. would you be happy to go/leave there when it gets dark), etc.? Thanks in advance for any thoughts :-)

I loved the cake fest and was totally impressed by the turnout and the cakesd! Especially the rhubarb bakewell tart! The oat milk demo and custard demo was really interesting too, thanks!

By the way, we ended up with about £100, which we're going to split between the community centre and the Vegan Organic Network ( which campaigns for Stockfree farming - removing all animal exploitation from our food production

Thanks everyone who came, Sara and I had a great time, though we ran out of time and energy to do all our demos!
It was pretty thrilling to be at an event with so many other vegans -we're not used to it.
When I've got over my sugar poisoning, we'll think about doing it again - and we'll definitely focus on non-chocolate, non-wheat or whatever else people want.
I'll update the cakefest page with links and info people ask for. (I may need a kick to get on with it)
    Lovely to meet you all.
A special thanks to Linda and Anne.
And please contribute to if you want to explore sustainable vegan food with us

Hi Gemma, do please edit this event to use the 'Holly Lodge Community Centre' (no 'the' at the start) venue which appears correctly on the map. Cheers

brilliant, lovely day. i am always at a disadvantage at these cake meet ups...why you my ask? i don't like chocolate cake, and there were a lot of chocolate cakes, so you missed out if they are your favorite. but i did enjoy, especially the bakewell tart and the flower covered cake, and the little tarts, and i think i better stop there. met some interesting people too.

Delightful afternoon; my mum & I's Chocolate Cupcakes went so quickly! I had thought of maybe trying a bit to see how they'd come out but I didn't get round to it & they went in a flash. So.... could anyone who had a Chocolate icing topped cupcake please let us know what they thought, as my mum likes to know how her bakings coming along (consistency, sweetness, etc); cheers! >> There was some lovely cakes... that chocolate cake with like a biscuity base that I got the last slice of at about 3pm was nice.... can people pop recipes up here? Cheers! I didn't get round to making many notes! The little tartlet things were yummy, the cookies were nice too... it was all lovely! :) All the best, Jess :)

    Hi Richard

I'm slightly confused by your comment
Gemma hasn't said there were any changes
to the event as far as i'm aware.

    April 15, 2013

    • Richard Ⓥ M.

Hi Linda. Gemma's used, or created, a duplicate location entry (a common problem on Meetup), if she can 'Change' it to use the original 'Holly Lodge Community Centre' one instead (see that link below), it'll show up better on the map, and I'll put the other out of action. Cheers
