Book Club @ Tibits

  • February 11, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Welcome to Book Club at Tibits.

We meet regularly on the second Tuesday of the month. Everyone is welcome, just bring yourself, a suggestion for the next book and a desire to eat some yummy food. If you've actually read this month's book, even better!

The book for this meeting is "Make Room! Make Room!" by Harry Harrison:

The book for next month (March) is "Yes Man" by Danny Wallace:

I recommend GreenMetropolis for second hand books, as all proceeds go either to the seller or charity.

Details for ordering my new novel, The Cupid Business, which I am thrilled to say was chosen last night as our book for April, are as follows:

    Kindle £1.99
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Cupid-Business-Julie-Rosenfield-ebook/dp/B00ICR4N1K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392195287&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Cupid+Business

    Amazon
Paperback can be ordered through the Amazon website but it's £8.99 plus postage. You can get it through me for £7 but not till the end of March. Please message me through the meetup group if you would like this option.

Otherwise, if you don't mind reading it on your PC, just message me through the Meetup group and I can send you a free PDF.

Any questions, please feel free to message me. Thank you!

  • Jessica

I'm sorry - I won't be able to make it tonight - I was really looking forward to it too! Sounds like maybe having one less isn't a bad thing though. Hope to meet all of you soon.

Due to the large number, we will have the tables along the wall. Not sure how we will cope :-)

Due to flooding my overground trains are all up the creek (without paddles it would seem) so I may not make it tonight. Will leave my reply as a yes as am going to try!

Tube strike has just been called off! http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-26130165

Tube Strike - as far as I can tell the Tube Strike is still going ahead from Tuesday 21:30. TFL don't yet give any indication which services may be running. Despite the record RSVPs this week, we will try to wrap it up by 9pm to give everyone a chance to get home.

Hi! I don't know if I can read Make room! make room! by Tuesday.. but will definitely be there for March meet up! :) so glad I found this group :) Will be nice to be around other vegans as I don't have any colleagues that are even veggie and my entire house share is carnivore so it's pretty hard so have a rational chat about the benefits most of the time!

    February 8, 2014

    • Julie

Jess, you don't have to have read the book to come to Book Club. We always have a summary first for anyone who hasn't read it so that everyone can join in. So do please come along. It will be lovely to see you! : )

:) yeah, food was good & had boyfriend with me so wasn't lonely. It's quite a depressing book but makes you think, and after all these years of thinking Soylent Green was made from humans, it's fab knowing that the film completely distorted the story & that they are in fact made from soya and lentils in the original story!! I wonder if Tibits can produce some vegan soya/lentil steaks for the evening?!!? Thanks for the heads up on Yes Man, that sounds really good too.

      February 7, 2014

    • Jaini

hmm thanks for the heads up... it sounds like Yes Man is the perfect book to read after that then! It is kinda silly at times but overall haven't laughed out loud like this with a book in ages! may just be me but hope you enjoy it too. cheers

      February 7, 2014

  • Jaini

Hiya.. sorry never been to the book club but such a freaky coincidence I am reading Yes Man at the moment .. its Hilarious!! just to confirm that's the book for next month, not next week right..?

    1 · February 5, 2014

    • ingrid g

Made me smile as I've never been to the (or even 'a') book club either but decided to brave it here as I was coincidentally reading Make Room! Make Room! (except I got the date wrong & turned up 2 weeks' early scrambling to get the book finished in time....but yes, it is next week for Make Room! Make Room!). Funny how it works out sometimes!

Oops, we're here NOW - 2 weeks early!!!! D'oh not sure how I got that so wrong? And finished the book last night in time for the meeting...oh well, can read it again hehe. We'll force ourselves to have a meal now we're here :P

In case it hasn't been mentioned, the book we are reading for February is Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison.
The book was the basis for the movie Soylent Green. If you can't find a copy in the bookshops/library then do a search in Google and it lists a free PDF version to download (don't quite know the legalities here, compared to borrowing it from a library, say)

    January 21, 2014

    • Jon H.

Thanks Brian. I thought I had updated this meeting, but it looks like I only updated January's.
