Board games and vegan food at Black Cat Cafe

I thought it'd be nice to combine two great things: board games and good vegan food! Hackney's finest eatery, The Black Cat Cafe, are happy to play host. Games will be provided (from simple and fun to longer strategy style), but feel free to bring your own.

Thank you guys! I had fun although Robb and Ian did thrash us all. Can't wait to get my REVENGE (Evil laugh). When is the next one? :)

Yeah they did crush us eh! We wanna try and find a way of doing it later than 8pm, but as soon as we work that out we'll book another!

Really fun evening, thanks to Olly and Bridget for organising and bringing along so many games to try - looking forward to the next one!

Enjoyed Zombies but would've been nice to mix more with all you folks on the big table and try other games ;) oh well, next time...

    Hope everyone had fun!
In the end we played Cranium, Love Letter, Zombies!!! and Forbidden Island, but we also had with us Dixit Odyssey, Taboo and Settlers of Catan. Thanks to the folks who brought Banagrams too!

Sorry to those people who were on the waiting list, we're already thinking about the next event and how we can make it even better and get more folks along! Firstly I think we'll up the maximum number of people (perhaps 30? Depends on the space we use). Black Cat is a lovely joint and the food is awesome, but they close a bit early. We're gonna see if we can negotiate a later opening time, or possibly somewhere else which opens later. Any ideas as welcome!

    Cheers,

    Olly

Oh, and I know 5:30 is a bit of an early start...if we can find somewhere which'll open later (or convince Black Cat) we'll start a bit later and go for longer!

Ack, I can no longer make this unfortunately as I have a friend coming to visit from out of town. Olly - if this is a success and you organise another one then I'll definitely try to make that! :)

No worries, I'm sure we'll do it again!

I have never heard of any of these board games!! Hopefully they're easy to learn, otherwise you'll all have to be very patient with me! :)

    January 13, 2014

    • Olly

Don't worry Jules, they range from really easy to still pretty easy :) There's nothing super difficult, and we'll help explain them all!

Good to hear! Thanks Olly :)

Hello! I'm on the waiting list but if I can get in I can bring Zombies, Tobago, Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica (if time to play!) :)

    January 12, 2014

    • Lynda

Yeah Tobago is cool! I think there's an online version of it somewhere too!

      January 13, 2014

    • Ian M.

I want to play Battlestar Galactica. But I can't make that day :(.

I'd like to come in future if it's not on a friday, and if anyone will play some eurogames with me (puerto rico or tigris and euphrates are my favourites)

    January 12, 2014

    • Olly

Keep your eyes peeled, if it goes well I'd like to do it again! If you're a distance away you should host one at an eatery near you :)

      January 12, 2014

    • Tom F.

I will definitely come if you do do it again, it's just that Fridays are always out for me as I volunteer that night. And I would be up for gentler games like Catan, Carc etc. too. There seems to be quite a big intersection of vegan board gamers

      January 13, 2014

  • Olly

Wow, full house already! The games I'm gonna bring are: Settlers of Catan (plus 6 player expansion) - a longish strategy game but not hard to pick up. Also Forbidden Island - a mid-length, fun collaborative game; Taboo - classic party game and easy to drop in and out of; and Love Letter - a cool, short card game of strategy and luck. I think I'll bring bananagrams too, as a nice easy game, and we could always play Stop the Bus (which requires nothing but pen and paper) if we fancied something different. Bridget and I will help people get the hang of the rules, so no experience is necessary :)

I'm really interrested in this but will only be finishing work at 5, is it OK if I get there by 6.30/7? I noticed you have an end time of 8, it that accurate?

    January 12, 2014

    • Olly

Hi Victoria, you're very welcome but yes it does end at 8 because that's when the cafe closes. I'm hoping we can convince them to stay open later in future!

      January 12, 2014

  • Olly

Ok I'm just getting the hang of this...I've capped it at 20 people because it's not a huge place. I've also added a reserve list :)

This is an experiment really, to see if it works as a meetup! Vegan/vegan-curious/non-vegan, everyone's welcome.
