Volunteer work day at F.R.I.E.N.D.

Hey London Animal loving Vegans!

I know it is very short notice but I hope one or the other is able to make it: I am organising another volunteer work day at F.R.I.E.N.D. on this Friday!! The weather supposed to be nice - apparently the sun is shining all day which is perfect for this kind of thing!

To those who haven't been at F.R.I.E.N.D. before, this is a vegan run Animal Rescue Sanctuary which provides a permanent home to around 150 abused, unwanted and orphaned farmed animals, so they can live peacefully for the rest of their lives. As well as farmed animals, this place is also providing shelter to many other animals including cats and dogs and other "pet" animals.

F.R.I.E.N.D. Animal Rescue Sanctuary is run by Marion and Marc who solely rely on the support of donations and volunteers and do not receive any public funding. However, they work very hard to make sure that the animals are well looked after and cared for.

Despite the work being a proper work out as there is always lots to do, these visits are a chance to actually interact with many animals that have been rescued from the farmed animal industry and meet like-minded people.

The work we are usually doing at F.R.I.E.N.D. includes feeding, mucking out and/or doing sanctuary maintenance work. So you will need wellies, a change of trousers/top and work gloves (!).

We are also usually having a break around lunchtime and as you might get hungry please bring vegan (this is a vegan place therefore vegan food only) snack or something for everyone to share. Please let everyone know in the comments below if you prefer to share or bring your own so those who want to share know how much food to bring. There is also a microwave if you want to heat up your food. Coffee and tea is usually already there.

GETTING THERE:

Unless you're driving down with your own car we meet at Charing Cross station at 9.15 - by the ticket office. Please bring a £5 note and some pound coins for the fare. The fare is approximately £8.55 each if 4 go group save or if there is an 'odd one over' then they pay the full fare and we share the difference - usually this is around an extra £2-3.

Please arrive as promptly as you can as we have to work out how many for the fare before getting the tickets and on the train!

We will be picked up and brought back to the station as a group therefore it is important to arrive at Paddock Wood Station together / at the same time – unless you don't need a lift / have your own car / bike / moped.

We will take the train back around 5.30 pm

I am doing these visits monthly at around the middle of the month - depending on my work schedule. The Animal Rights Meetup is also going every last Saturday of each month.

I would love to but have no toddler care that day and although my daughter would love it, we won't get much work done! Next time yes please. Thursdays or Tuesdays or weekends ever? X

Hi Alexia, yes usually I organise these visits on weekends! :) There will be an event sometime soon especially good for small children as on the work days the animals more or less all run free and FRIEND is not insured so we're not allowed to bring the small ones then. There are some very big pigs around. But for the event the animals would have a fenced run area :) When I know when it's taking place I'll put it up on meetup either as a meetup if i'm able to go then or in the forum to inform you all. Looking forward to meet you soon!

Shelley, I'm so sorry as I responded to Kate - I had a change of my work place as my actually work place had to close down - wasn't an easy time - will put up the next visit with much more notice! Such a shame it would have been great to have you (and Brandon?) at FRIEND!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
