The Vegan Publuck -- at The Pakenham Arms

Welcome to The Vegan Publuck, at The Pakenham Arms; a new weekend Potluck! :)

The Pakenham Arms has kindly agreed to host this on every 3rd Sunday of the month!

From 2pm till late, clearing away by 6pm, (& if you stay till late, there may be a folk music jam from 7.30pm in the evening,) join me & lots of lovely, friendly London Vegans, for a chilled, relaxed Sunday afternoon, of Homemade Vegan food & whatever drinks take your fancy!

You can arrive anytime from 2pm; I will make an announcement at 2.30pm, welcoming everyone, then I'll distribute plates & forks & let everyone start eating!

There's plenty of time to put your dish down, eat & hang out!

We may well clear away as we go, or be cleared away much earlier, but I'll start a final clear away at 5.30pm, to be completely clear for 6pm; if you're free, we may hang out till late to enjoy the live music!

There are plenty of Vegan beers/ales/ciders, on tap or in bottles, plus Spirits, including 60 different Whiskys!! (I know most spirits are Vegan friendly, but I haven't checked every last spirit they have!)

Here's a basic Vegan drinks guide for The Pakenham Arms;

>>On Tap>> Peroni, Vier (Becks), Stella Artois

>> In bottles >> Clarkshaws Hellhound, Smirnoff Ice, Wkd, Desperados, Heineken, Becks, Thatchers Rose, Old Rosie Cider (Westons), Kingstone Press, Budweiser

>>And here are the non-alchoholic options>> Becks Blue (non-alcoholic Beer), J20's Apple and raspberry, Apple & mango, Glitterberry, Orange and passionfruit; Britvic Mineral Water, Cranberry, pineapple, Orange, Tomato, Ginger ale, Tonic water, Rwhites diet lemonade, Shwepps Original Lemonade, Coke and Diet coke

Entry is Free, you just pay for your drinks, so no need to bring cartons or bottles of drink as an additional contribution. :)

The details; Anyone who knows how Sean's fantastic well established Wednesday potluck works, will know it's pretty simple; bring a dish, share recipes & meet lots of lovely people!

*Please bring a Vegan homemade dish (one per adult or teenager) ; for the sake of clarity, :) , that means, of course, NO Meat, Fish, Dairy, Eggs or Honey! If you don't bring a dish, I'm afraid you wont be welcome to share our food. Of course, you can buy yourself a drink if you like!

*If you really can't bring a homemade dish, or can't cook, you could bring something shop bought, but it should be a reasonable contribution--a bunch of bananas or a punnet of grapes is a little small!! :)

*As a rough rule of thumb, think about catering for 10-30 people, so e.g. 2 dozen made or bought cupcakes, 2 large pizzas, a big cous cous salad, etc... :)

*The pub can comfortably accommodate 50+ people, plus seating at the bar, & in nice weather, there's seating outside too! There's also a pool table for anyone who fancies a game! :)

*The pub is child friendly, so if you have kids, do feel free to bring them! :)

*Please provide an ingredients list, & indicate if it's Nut free or Gluten free for those with allergies or intolerances

*Please bring a serving utensil if needed for your dish

I will be providing disposable plates & cutlery, plus serviettes; please keep things as tidy as possible, it'll make clearing away that much easier for me; cheers!

And that's everything!

I look forward to welcoming you to The Vegan Publuck!

All the best,

Jess :)

Hi Publuckers! The Pakenham needs your help! It's going to be closed down but if we petition, Camden Council will take notice & it might be saved by something called article 4, preventing change of use! Please sign; thank you! :) x http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/save-the-pakenham-arms-a-much-loved-over-150yr

i believe being a veggie and cycling go hand in hand, it's the most efficient mode of transport with the least amount of impact on the environment, & it gives you wings !

Absolutely Hasan!! Wonderful philosophy! I try to walk a lot (not so keen on cycling I'm afraid for fear of being knocked down by a bad driver).

So sorry to hear that the pub is closing down!! Jess, another possible venue could be a vestry hall in a church although they would require a payment, but maybe the payment could be covered from profits re the organizer(s) selling drinks at the event.

    • Jessica Stella F.

Thanks Patricia; I have a good lead on a new venue-- I've just got to meet the manager, check a few details, but it looks good! So I'll keep everyone posted and as soon as I can confirm it, I will be updating the event pages! And it'll only be 10 minutes away from the Pakenham, so it's still local/central! Just over the border in Islington! I will find out more soonish! Bye for now, Jess :)

Thanks everyone!!! Only thing is I've ruddy well misplaced my phone!!! Pretty sure Gabby, or Ellen or Jamie may have accidentally picked it up and are at Inspiral!! I have some numbers on a free text site I use but I'm not even sure I texted the right number, (Gabby) I'm so tired!!! :P I think so...?? Anyway.... apart from that tired/bewildered stuff, so happy about how lovely the 2nd Publuck was!! Thanks so much!!! Sadly, & I didn't make a big announcement about this yet, The Pakenham Arms is CLOSING DOWN!! I will find a replacement pub, hopefully nearby, but frustratingly not the Pakenham next month!!! Anyway, you are all invited to come for an informal 'Vegan Drinking' Meet up, their leaving party on 4th July! If you can make it, see you there! :) I'll put a meet up about it soon!! :) See you soonish!! Drinks next!!! :) All the best, Jess :)

hmm pondering if its practical to bring a lime sorbet and keeping it reasonably frozen. I have a coolbox - would be nice in hot weather ...

    June 11, 2014

    • Jessica Stella F.

It is supposed to be nice weather indeed; if you have some cold packs, (my brother freezes them in our fridge-used in sports injurys, you know) plus coolbox, might work!! Good luck!! :)

Hi Jess, I'm a bit confused because it looks like one would have to bring a contribution for say 24 people (as you said 2 dozen cupcakes). Or two large pizzas would cater for 10 people. Yet if everybody was to do that, we would have far too much food available. I would have thought that if each person brought enough food for two people that would cover the catering more than adequately? I'm not try to be mean, just sensible. It's not as if I'm sure that I can come anyway, but I'm just trying to clarify the situation. What do you think? All the best anyway!!

Hi Beata (& Publuckers!), I think the rough guide of 10-30 is a fair request (given numbers of attendees can reach 70 at Sean's; I think there's only room for 50+ at the pub! :) ) & I think it would be somewhat frowned upon if an individual did eat from just one dish from the potluck 'spread'; I recall Sean pointing out a similar issue, as in people taking too much of certain dishes when the idea is a buffet spirit; trying a little bit of everything :) (&once you've had your first dish/everyone's had something, then go up & get 2nds. The other wording Sean once used was ''bring as much as you would eat'', as sometimes the food would be half gone by about half an hour into the potluck! I once turned up only 15 minutes late (6.30pmish) &amost all the savoury dishes were gone & there was not as much as at previous potlucks; it is an unpredictable thing, a potluck.

I was a bit nervous leading up to the 1st Publuck (i.e. would enough people turn up/bring enough food) but on the day, it was perfect & went really well! I think it's pretty straight forward what I've written & learnt from attending Sean's Potluck for over 2 years. I look forward to seeing you & everyone at the 2nd Publuck!! All the best, Jess :)

Thanks Jess, I've not attended the Wednesday potluck so I'm rather ignorant of such matters. All the best!!

    June 9, 2014

    • Jessica Stella F.

Cheers Patricia :) ; no worries, Publuck was set up / inspired by people wondering about having a potluck on the weekend, so people who can't usually get to the Wednesday one can make it! Maybe see you next weekend! All the best, Jess :)
