Brick Lane Walkabout

Sunday will begin with heavy rain, but it's forecast to peter out during the Meetup.

Wander around Spitalfields and Bricklane, enjoying the wide range of vegan delights those markets offer!

Directions

The main group will gather at the exit to Shoreditch High Street Overground at 12:30, and set off at 12:40 to reach Christ Church Spitalfields at 12:45. (I look like a bearded version of my profile pic.)

If it is raining, we will go straight into Spitalfields Market and wait near the eating area that's near Pilpel Falafel.

Badger (no beard; dark brown hat in reasonable weather) will (tube network permitting) lead a group from Aldgate East Tube Station. (If there's no sign of him by 12:40, please make your own way as below).

And Hasan (jacket with green armband; carrying a toolkit) will lead a group from the Bishopsgate Exit of Liverpool Street Station.

Although Shoreditch High Street Station is the easiest place to meet (it's only got one exit), you can join us at Christ Church Spitalfields if another route is easier:

• From Liverpool Street Station, take the Bishopsgate exit, cross the road, and turn left. (If you took the subway under Bishopsgate, you'll be facing the other way and need to turn right.) Walk a few hundred metres, and turn right into Brushfield Street. (You'll see the tall grey angular shape of Christ Church Spitalfields at the end of the Street)

• From Aldgate East, should you or Badger be late, walk to the western end of your platform (Commercial Street exit), and exit on the north side of Whitechapel Road. Walk up Commercial Street to Christ Church Spitalfields

• From Shoreditch High Street Overground, should you need to catch us up, turn right under the railway bridge and continue until the T-junction with Commercial Street; turn left and walk for five minutes.

• Or put "E1 6LY" into your map app

If you're planning on coming from south London by Overground, be aware that the branch between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays - that would take folk from Clapham, Brixton, and Peckham straight to Shoreditch High Street - is suspended on Sunday.

13:00ish - Spitalfields Market

Delicious salads and wraps from Rainforest Creations at Spitalfields

A healthy start with Rainforest Creations, chocolate-dipped bananas, smoothies, and quite a bit of shopping. We'll take over a couple of picnic tables before heading on to ...

14:00ish - The Upmarket, Brick Lane

Definitely the best Ethopian injera in London, Brick Lane Upmarket & Boiler Room Food Hall

"Vying for attention in the market heavy Brick Lane, though frankly the biggest draw by far, is the Sunday UpMarket in the Old Truman Brewery. Here, you’ll find a buzzing mishmash of mopey students, bona fide locals and edgy attention seekers riffling through vintage stalls, quirky crafts by up-and-coming designers and stacks of old vinyl." - Time Out London

Indonesian Vegan Redang, Brick Lane Upmarket

This size also means the biggest selection of food, including some vegan international cuisine you won't find elsewhere - like the Redang above.

15:00ish The Boiler Room Food Hall

"No, we don't have vegan, but we have gluten-free. Will that do?"

(Only joking. Seitan's Kitchen,  Boiler Room Food Hall, Brick Lane)

If the Upmarket is the biggest selection, the Boiler Room is vegan central. Not just another two injera stalls and falafel, it's home to two unique vegan eateries - the burgers and kebabs of Seitan's Kitchen and our well-earned dessert:

Our very own Vanessa's Essential Vegan, Boiler Room Food Hall, Brick Lane

Laterish

Depending on the weather and the group's desires, we might go for a picnic in Allen Gardens to eat our food; and after the meetup we can retire to a cafe with vegan cake and vegan beer at the top end of Brick Lane.

Update: although the bad weather will peter out during this Meetup, the grass will likely still be wet so a picnic seems unlikely.

And also to Hasan and Badger for bringing people to Spitalfields, esp Hasan, and everyone else I corralled into helping out over the afternoon.

Ian, all i have to say is that you cant blame me for anything, You must take FULL responsibility for everything, i was just following 'orders', that my defense & i'm sticking to it :-)

Really enjoyable day. Thanks Ian for arranging. The Rainforest Creations' Caribbean Roti was so yummy and filling, I didn't have room for an Ethiopian meal, so look forward to having this next time.

JUST A NOTE, my comment above was not suggesting that any of the vegan food at this event wasn't vegan, the comment was in relation to a conversation Brian & i had last week about food & eating out habits &
      'rituals'.

Down right 'fussy' eaters, strict followers of the various religious orders, one's with super, super strict diets &those with anxiety, OCD, & weirdo's already know what their habits & 'rituals' are ;-)

'Normal people' & everyone else, there's nothing to worry about, carry on as you were :-)

Thank you Ian. Such an enjoyable afternoon full of great people. We really enjoyed the The Rainforest Creations' Caribbean Roti and Essential Vegan cakes. It was great that you (and others) cared for those waiting in varied places. I have experienced an event when the organiser is not accessible via the meetup board and another when nobody is at the meetup point (or what you expect is the meetup point) with no announcement on the meetup board and no response to it.

Never been so true: 'one mans junk is another mans treasure.' Let me know if you ever want a rescued dog for yourself one day? I volunteer as a home assessor via RESCUE HELPERS UNITE. So many being killed daily in the pounds.

Brilliantly organised and guided with the right number of stops. Great vegan food options and opportunities to chat and meet new friends.

Brilliantly organised and guided day. Just the right number of stops. Great to discover new bits of vegan London, to chat with new friends and to partake in public cat voyeurism en masse outside Lady Dinah's :) Well done , Ian on a great day. Fav food of the day was the vegan eclair at the Boiler rooms.

    August 10, 2014

    • hasan

YES IT IS STILL DEFINITELY ON, it has stopped raining, but rain is expected at some point between 2 - 4 pm, but as Ian has already said, by then we will be in one of the many large indoor markets :-)

      August 10, 2014

What Hasan said. It's almost entirely indoors.

Those that intend to MEET with me @ LIVERPOOL STREET STATION,

i will be wearing a GREEN ARMBAND and waiting at the BISHOPS GATE exit,

Between 12.30 to 12. 40 pm after which we will make our way to meetup with the main group @ CHRIST CHURCH, junction of Brushfield St & Commercial St.

    August 10, 2014

    • Marianne

I will also meet you guys at Liverpool Street!

      August 10, 2014

  • hasan

In order that no one gets left behind or lost, and so that we know how many people we are suppose to be waiting to meetup with at each meeting point,

PLEASE DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

    August 9, 2014

    • Ian M.

Thanks for this idea; it's a neat way of signalling which group you intend to meet with. But it's not going to stop folk from being left behind; there are just too many of us to keep everyone waiting. (Particularly as we won't necessarily know who is late and who is cancelling.)

      1 · August 10, 2014

    • hasan

true & i agree, but it wasn't meant to be an absolutely accurate list, just a rough gauge as to how many people likely to meet where.

and whether to wait just that extra few minutes, just in case someones train is that 2 mins late etc, bearing in mind & barring extremely late arrivals or 'no shows'.

      - no point in doing that if all the people on the list are present or if no one has indicated to meet at a particular point in the first place :-)

      August 10, 2014

  • Caroline N

Hi All, I'll be there unless prevented by the rainstorm that has been predicted for Sunday. I hope it's just a drizzle. :(

    August 8, 2014

    • Ian M.

All the markets are indoor. We'll mostly be able to time the walking bits to be between the showers.

      August 8, 2014

    • Ian M.

The new forecast says the rain will peter out during the Meetup.

      August 10, 2014
