Richmond Park Vegan Picnic

Please come and bring vegan food for sharing and meet for a picnic with veggie and vegan families and others in the early Summer in Richmond Park at the Kingston Gate of the park. If we get rained off like last year's which was cancelled I propose Sunday 1st July as the back up date.

Nearest station is NORBITON, not Kingston.

One of the picnic attendees has today discovered a deer tick buried in their skin. If not removed correctly, these can cause Lyme's disease - which can be very serious. So please check yourselves and take medical advice if necessary.

Yes I don't think I envy you the task of trying to organise the event Lesley! Although take comfort in the fact that this seemed to be a big success and the other persons comment was probably less to do with what you said and more to do with how bad a day they were having right then. xx

Don't worry about it Sam or Shelley, it was good anyway, I was more stressed than anything that the accusation against me in the messages might have been what scared ppl off from coming, and that this was the reason for reduced numbers! I can see now maybe it was just other reasons that so many did not show.

    Hi Lesley//Robb
I had filled in a section which said I'm not attending with a post but it doesn't appear anywhere. I'm sorry about that, as I am new and perhaps I messed it up... None the less I'm trying again to apologize for my absence on Sun. I had an unexpected visit from overseas family on the Saturday and didn't manage to do my preparation for Sun, add to that the unpredictable weather and the need to get my kids organized for back to school, I just didn't manage it. My sincere apology!

Some nice food to share and eat. Met some really nice people.
Big thanks to Lesley for organising the picnic. We went for a walk after in the park, we saw lots of Deers (+Bambies) and some lovely scenery. Thanks to the guy with the cap (sorry forgot your name) that shared some knowledge about Deers.
Lastly, huge thanks to Zenith and Gupi(hope I have spelt it right) for the lift back to Norbiton station. Very much appreciated.

Thanks for explaining Mia, clearly reminders are needed.
I like the idea of another picnic, if someone else will set it up and decide on meet up points, etc. It was a nice one BUT after having to deal with being totally unfairly accused of being rude on this page by one individual, & not receiving an apology, even after others had pointed out that I was very clearly NOT rude, I am not sure I want to take the flak that comes with being the coordinator for a while. Maybe I am oversensitive..

    June 11, 2012

  • Mia

Oops yes I was also one of those who rsvp-ed and then couldn't attend. I was on holiday and completely slipped my mind to change the reply. I apologise for the no-show and hope that the picnic in the park is repeated as it sounded great fun! Look forward to meeting up soon! x

  • Lesley D.

But we also had others not from this group so still about 30 ppl and a good time (so I am not really complaining!)

    June 11, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Lisa thank you for the lovely comments!

Adam it was far from only you who may have forgotten, at least you have explained, thank you, you are very polite, some less so! Maybe just human nature to forget. More than 1/2 of the 46 shown as attending did not in fact show! I thought a few may text or email, but they didn't .. so is it always best to send out a reminder to ppl? I just assume ppl put the date in their diary on saying yes. It would never occur to me NOT to do that when I say yes.

Lesley did a really good job organising this meet up. It was a really good day, a little surreal and quirky, which added to the ambience due to the fact that it sporadically rained at points during the picnic, with most of us holding umbrellas whilst conversing and eating, but hey what’s life without a little eccentricity! Zenith continued the picnic by proposing a hot drink at the café, followed by a nature walk, which turned out to be both adventurous and scenic, to say the least! Thanks to Lesley for organising the picnic, Zenith and Gupi for taking two groups to the cafe and back to the train station. This was much appreciated.

Morning. Extremely sorry that I said I was going and didn't. I was at work, but no excuses. I'd simply forgotten that I'd RSVPed until I got an email this morning asking me to review the meet-up! I DID really want to go, and I shall attend the next one I'm available for. From now on I won't RSVP until very late on so I can be sure I'll be able to go. SORRY!

Thanks for the support and appreciation Jon and Richard, and everyone else who has been positive, you all know who you are! It was a great day about 30 of us including some families, ppl of all ages which was lovely.

This is why I hate non-verbal electronic forms of communication! It often leads to misunderstandings, as you can't hear the way something is being put across. "near the Kingston Gate" was a perfectly reasonable answer, and "It is" clearly implies the picnic. I've suggested to Lesley that in future a Google Map with the approximate picnic site could be added to the description. Sorry to hear of your bereavement Amrit. I hope you all enjoy your picnic.

    1 · June 10, 2012

Sadly, I can't make it now (it's all the kids' fault). Lesley, don't worry about the odd misunderstanding, with so many people interested it's bound to happen and you are obviously doing a fantastic job! Have a great day.

  • Lesley D.

Really must get off now, anyone needs to contact me you have my mobile..

    June 10, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Amrit, so sorry for your loss! It was so nice of you letting us know, and under the circumstances would not have expected you to log on and have time to get in touch about cancelling! You take care and hope to see you next month.

    June 10, 2012

  • Lesley D.

OK really really hurting about accusation of rudeness, and worse still the lack of any apology for that accusation. I need to go away and calm down I think, not get distracted this is going to be nice day in spite of that one person being nasty to me!

    June 10, 2012

  • Amrit

Hi all, I'm so sorry that it's a bit last minute but we can't come today because of a family bereavement.
Please do all go ahead and have a brilliant time though! I was so looking forward to meeting up with you all too!

    June 10, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Please could everyone ALWAYS be nice to coordinators of events and not ASSUME someone is not being polite when the person clearly simply misunderstood a question about where we will be.. it is not really a lot to ask is it for ppl to not assume the worst of me? I am trying my best.. ppl's expectations of me may put me off organising in future.. I do not really want that to happen.. but sorry for not putting my mobile up earlier, I assumed ppl had it from earlier events eg pub meet/Monday lunch

    June 10, 2012

  • Lesley D.

In what way could you possibly think I was being rude? I am absolutely stunned (and hurt!) by your comment! I was NOT being rude at all! We would be remaining close to the gate I should think, as we have done before, so making it easier to find for anyone getting there later, that was always the plan and sorry if it was unclear. You all have my monile number anyway if any problems finding us,[masked]

I wonder what's the point in being Veg/Vegan if one is not even capable to be polite with her/his fellow human beings... clearly you failed to understand that I didn't want to meet you at the starting point, but perhaps directly at the chosen place for the pick nick, if you had something in mind. So one should either reply "sorry I haven't yet decided where where we are going to stop" or "I think we will be in that area, near the lakes or whatever, we are a big enough group you will see us"!

    June 10, 2012

It is going to be near the Kingston Gate, can you look instead at the map here on this event page?

    Hi Lesley,
this is a map of the park http://www.royalparks.org.uk/docs/park_maps/RichmondPark_English_Map.pdf
where do you think you'll be having the pick-nick?

    June 10, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Looks like it might be not very warm, and may be cloudy but we're going ahead as no rain is forecast until the evening.

Will be coming with my daughter (weather permitting). Looking forward to meet other vegan/vegetarian family.

I see the Met Office have forecast cloud but not rain - http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/london

    June 9, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Another idea, if we make the decision this evening instead of tomorrow morning, could the Pogo event still go ahead in a small way and be uncancelled Robb? It would be sad for those who wanted to go to miss out..

    June 9, 2012

  • Lesley D.

I only just noticed Robb actually cancelled his regular event in favour of this! I feel so awful now as I think there would've been enough ppl for events to go ahead both ends of London, esp if this ends up cancelled! I did not want anything cancelled on account of our picnic especially knowing the British weather..

    June 9, 2012

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

It's probably worth pointing out that Norbiton station is nearest, don't go to Richmond... unless you intend to walk for an hour, or spend half an hour on a bus :-)

    1 · June 9, 2012

  • Lesley D.

After not having a summer picnic for our group last year due to being cancelled on 12th June last year, with no back up date, I am very determined it will happen this year, hence the back up date and reserve back up date! I may sound more organised than I really am..

    June 8, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Hi Robb, I wonder if it may be best for us to decide Sat evening really so ppl know if they need prepare or not. For now the forecast is bad for Sunday, but I will keep checking tomorrow. Weather supposed to be good tomorrow, which makes it all the more annoying that Sunday is forecast as rainy. We do have a back up date, 1st July, if that is any help. In the event of rain both dates I would suggest a second back up if we are really unlucky, for 22nd July (I am busy on the 8th AND the 15th!)

    June 8, 2012

  • Robb

Lesley, would you be able to update this at, say, 10am on Sunday to say whether it's going ahead or has been rained off? That way people can double check before heading out. If it's tipping down or blazing sunshine it'll probably be obvious! But if it's just drizzling (or threatening to rain) then it'd be useful to have confirmation.

    June 8, 2012

  • Lesley D.

That's OK, just sick of this weather, it's supposed to be "flaming" June, I am sure at one time you could count on good weather in June..

    June 7, 2012

  • arti

    woops, sorry hun!! x

    June 7, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Please could everyone always read the full event details before asking questions. Your question about alternate plans is already answered at the top of this page. After being forced to cancel due to rain at this time of June last year we decided to work out a back up date of July 1st if rain forced us to cancel this time. Anyway we shall see on Sat evening what the forecast is by then in case it changes.

    June 7, 2012

  • arti

I see theres rain forecasted, what does that meeeeean for us?????? Is there an alternate plan like moving it to australia? :)

    June 7, 2012

  • Lesley D.

Obviously we don't expect anyone to bring enough to share any one item with the whole group, but just bring enough for yourself plus a little extra and we should be OK. It's not meant to be a highly "organised" event. I certainly can't see a problem bringing your dog along, it is in a park after all, lots of open space and a very good place to bring dogs.

  • Richard Ⓥ M.

Okay, the map should be okay now. Though we've now possibly got yet another duplicate floating around (If that's the case, I'll try to nobble it so no-one uses it in future!).

I am happy if you change it to the Car Park, I tried to but it would not work for me!

Don't forget there's the Croydon picnic too, on Saturday 2nd June http://meetup.com/Surrey-Vegetarians-and-Vegans/events/61902652/

Seems to be more or less okay now, though I'd still rather see us using the car park as the meeting place http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=17136637690396885144

More specifically my friend is in South Woodford which at the eastern end of the central line, also near Walthamstow on the victoria line. It's north-east London, in the London Borough of Redbridge. Not sure if her friend also needs a lift but possibly.

    May 24, 2012

Is anyone driving over from East London, as I have a couple of ladies who would like to come along to meet more vegans from all over London but as this is not on a tube line they think it might be difficult, and it would really help if someone can offer a lift. Thanks.
