Brixton Vegan Walkabout-With Vegan Tart,Saba's,Ms Cupcake,DogStar+Brockwell Park

On the first Saturday of the month......

The Brixton Vegan Walkabout!!
(Featuring; The Vegan Tart, Saba's Vegan option, Ms Cupcake, drinks at The Dog Star & any other delights; suggestions welcome!)

Come rain, shine, (or snow!) come to Brixton & explore!

We meet at;
Brixton Tube Station at 12:30pm

Buses that stop near by>>
45, 59, 109, 118, 133, 159, 250, 333

The Vegan Tart *BRIXTON BAKE OFF-BEST In Show & BEST Savoury 2013!!*
From Chocolate Tarts, to Lime & Thyme, from Homity Pies to Cookies or Scones, enjoy something yummy indeed inspired by the 1950's, with a dash of Twin Peaks indeed! >> http://www.facebook/thevegantart

Dumisani & Andy, the 'tarts' :)

Saba's Ethiopian Stall
Enjoy the great vegan option*, of injera (pancake made with self raising flower) or rice, with lentils, mixed veg & salad!
((*non-vegan option cooked totally separately))

A fine example of what to expect....... :)

(Photo I took of my plate in October 2012)

Ms Cupcake
With plenty of naughty cupcakes to choose from, (including lots of chocolate ganaches, with mint, coffee, hazelnut, strawberry & other flavours indeed), plus a fridge full of Vegan Ice Cream, Rice Puddings, plus savoury pastries & new Vegan sandwiches, there's lots to tempt you at Ms Cupcakes Brixton base!

Ms Cupcake (AKA 'Melissa') with a very naughty tray of her creations!

Other Brixton Vegan delights....* checked/recommended-there may well be more to discover...but this is a pretty extensive list! :) *

>See Trina's Delicacies, (Vegetarian & Vegan), for her Vegan brownies & cupcakes; she often has free samples to try too...well worth a try :) . I've had 2 cupcakes; nice delicate, fluffy, yum! ((Located near Saba's/Vegan Tart))

Trina's Delicacies

>Check out Taza falafal *to the right, by the Recreation Centre Staircase*; yummy, fresh, well worth getting the large one!

>The Oracle's Organic Juice Bar; lovely salads & fresh juices in Brixton Village, 6th Avenue; see Sean's article here..... :)

You can crush us | fatgayvegan

>Franca Manca; ((4, Market Row, covered market)) I've heard people rate the vegan option here- I've heard there's one vegan pizza option, then you can add toppings; little bit pricey *about £1.50 per extra topping* but a friend said she just had the plain Margareita *minus cheese indeed* with just Artichokes added, that works out a good deal & sounds nice indeed!

Franco Manca - Brixton

>L'Express; (Market Row; a short walk from Ms Cupcake!) the 'greasy spoon' Express Cafe, that is 'taken over' on certain evenings, becoming a French Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurant.... nice people, yummy vegan options, well worth a look!

L'Express Cafe - London, United Kingdom - Vegetarian & Vegan ...

And Local shopping;

Holland & Barratt (Brixton Road)

Brixton Wholefoods (Atlantic Road)

Seating options >>
there is some seating that may be available in the market, there is also a seating area upstairs outside the Recreation Centre, to the left; at Ms Cupcake, there is some out door seating available; also option of drinks, at the next door cafe!

After enjoying some Vegan delights, then.....

The Dog Star!'s off to pub around 2.30 or 3ish (it may be earlier if the weather is a bit much! Haha!!) for drinks & good conversation!! :)

OR *weather permitting!*

Brockwell Park

At 3ish, if you fancy a trip to Brockwell Park, I'll head off with a little group for a couple of hours *say till about 5ish; could vary!* & meet whoever's still in the pub later on! I rather like the Walled Garden :)

(Brockwell Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia>> At the end of Coldharbor Lane, with the main part of Brixton Road to your right, turn left passing by the Ritzy Cinema, & go up the main road, which is where Brixton Road becomes Effra Road; there are buses but it's not a long walk, roughly 10/15 minutes. Keep your eyes peeled at the road names to your left; when you see a street called Brixton Water Lane, turn left & after a short walk, the park entrance is on your right)

So, latecomers, get yourselves down Brixton Station Road; if you don't see a group of vegans queuing by Saba or loitering at The Vegan Tart stand---

1) Look around the market for a seated area or generally explore the area! You are very likely to bump into someone you know!

2) Pop up those stairs to the Recreation Centre & look to your left

3) Pop by Ms Cupcake...

4) Gone 3pm? Just get down to The Dog Star!! OR head up to Brockwell Park! :)

So, after the success of past trips, I look forward to more trips!!
All the best, Bye for now, Jess :)

Just to say if anyone fancies a detour in the afternoon, I will be singing with the Tonic Choir in the Clore Ballroom inside the foyer of the Royal Festival Hall from 3.30 pm until 4.00 pm. Will join you in Brixton afterwards! : )

Talking of detours.... weather permitting... Brockwell Park anyone ? From 3ish-5ish then off to the pub to catch up with 'straight to pub' crowd? :) x

  • Storm W.

won't be able to get there now

    May 4, 2013

  • Katriona M.

Will there be someone to contact if any of us arrive there later?

    May 4, 2013

    • Jessica Stella F.

Or if you don't know the area that well, just exit the tube & turn right; keep walking by a bridge or 2 until you see the beginings of a market to your right; turn into the market & keep your eyes peeled on your right, for The Vegan Tart! *They're aren't hard to miss, check out the hats!!* & you should find out if you've just missed our group from them--have a wonder down the market....then, passing the recreation centre, you'll want to turn right...& exit at a mainish road & turn left, following the curve of the road--to the corner of Coldharbor Lane... here you'll see the corner pub, Dog Star...pop in there at 3ish & there'll be a group about; or earlier? Go to Ms Cupcake...

      May 4, 2013

    • Jessica Stella F.

If you get confused, just ask someone 'where's Coldharbor Lane?' Or 'Where's Ms Cupcake?' .... also I'll be heading down Brockwell park at 3ish; so at the bottom of Coldharbor Lane, turn left, walking past the Ritzy Cinema, its only about a 10 minute walk; look for 'Brixton Water Lane', turn left, & soon you'll see the entrance to the park on the right side of the street; you need to go to the walled Garden, about a 5 minute walk into the park :) & indeed, if you know anyone who has RSVP'd, & you have their number, give them a ring! I just don't put my number up here as I want to keep it private & this'll be the 8th WAlkabout I've hosted without it! My friend Ellen did offer her number for a little while on some of my past meet ups but I've done this so much now without my number & given clear instructions, its quite unnessisairy!! Hope you find your way alright! see you down South of the River! Jess :)

      May 4, 2013

  • Jessica Stella F.

So lovely to see 34 RSVP's! The sun's out, only 1 shower due tomorrow, but we can shelter at Ms Cupcake then I'll be wondering off to Brockwell park! Join me if you fancy, & I'll see anyone still at The Dog Star later! Also....Helen's suggested a pub with a nice Beer Garden but can't recall the name right now but will post a note soonish so maybe we'll head there! Sounds nice with the sun out & everything!! See you all South of the River soon!! :)

I can hear a cupcake calling "eat me"!!! (I'm not quite sure at this distance away from it what flavour it is...I need to get closer!) So I'll try to catch up with you all at Ms Cupcake x

ha, ha, I feel the same. I think I have been dreaming with cakes and cupcakes all week. :)

      May 3, 2013

  • Lesley D.

Roughly how long is the "walkabout" Jess? I have been meaning to make it to this for ages and still cannot commit myself absolutely yet as may need to catch up on some chores, but just like to say I am a "maybe" (before now it's usually clashed with something - last 3 months it's been my deer demo, the AR Action weekend, and the Grand National demo, so hey at least good excuses I had lately!).

    April 29, 2013

    • Jessica Stella F.

Hi Lesley! It varies, but it can be an all dayer; it usually goes like this--meet abt.12.30pm @Brixton Tube & wait 10 minutes for latecomers, then we wonder to the market. So, 12.45-abt.2pm, we're in the market-sometimes, by 2/2.30, we'll already be@Ms Cupcake or people just find us enroute! Abt. 3,we're@The Dog Star! Sometimes people start heading home around 6ish or 6.30 at the earliest--the latest one was in February, where I stayed out with a few people till 11:45pm@The Prince Albert-In addition, I'm thinking of adding a detour *weather permitting* after exploring Brockwell park recently; so, for those who fancy the park, *from say 3-5ish?* we can head to the pub to catch up with the others after that! It'll be lovely to see you whenever you can make it! TheMarket itself closes@5pm; other shops/cafes, etc, in the area close at different times*6/7/8ish?*;Ms Cupcake closes at 7pm.All the best! Maybe see you soon! Jess :) x

And actually, *& I didn't realize this, as so used to doing this just once a month!* month!* the market is every (or) most Saturday's, its just The Vegan Tart who only do it once a month, so you can pop down Brixton next Saturday if you fancy! :) All the best, see you soon sometimes, Jess :)

I would take your suggested detour, but I also want to see/hear the fantastic Marama Café Band at the St George's Day (they named it after me) Fair in St George's Gardens, Bloomsbury — which is conveniently next to the London Ikeda Peace Centre in Wakefield Street, the Nichiren Buddhism centre where in any case I have to attend a monthly editorial meeting of which I edit. (Anyone like to know any more about my full and fascinating social life?!?!)
