Eco and Vegan friendly furniture

Hello, I'm in the process of buying my first home and was wondering if anyone had any advice about furniture and decorating. Budget is very limited. Are there any chain stores that should definitely be avoided? Are certain types of wood more eco friendly than others? Any advice is really appreciated. x

Clearly softwood would be preferable over hardwood (FSC certification isn't always reliable), unless you're buying second-hand/using reclaimed timber. See this Google search for more info.

Sadly paint, or its ingredients, are often tested on animals or contain animal by-products... a few companies do offer vegan-friendly products (such as Ecos), see this article.
