Creative Writing Workshop

  • October 14, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • Shooting Star pub

Join us for a night of creative writing revelry. Workshop nights are aimed at writers of all forms - novels, short stories, plays, poems - everyone is welcome. They're relaxed, friendly and the format is simple; up to 25 can attend and six of those people volunteer to read their work for applause, discussion and feedback.

Hosted by: Judith & David

To read on the night, you must request a place in advance.

Request a reading slot by posting a comment below. Slots are assigned in order of first come, first served. A reading slot allows you 10 minutes to read and then 5-10 minutes for comments and questions from the group.  If you are reading, please bring at least 10 copies to share as you'll get better quality feedback.

Please note: Reading slots are very popular but if you scroll ahead in our calendar you'll find a night in a few weeks with places open.

As a courtesy, please, please, please change your RSVP if you can no longer make it. We often have a waiting list of people who REALLY want to attend, so please change your RSVP so others can take the spot.

Costs: £5 per session. Please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP. Refunds will only be offered if the meetup is cancelled.

Location: The Shooting Star is less than 5mins walk from Liverpool Street station, on the central Line.

Directions: Take the Bishopsgate exit from the main rail concourse, cross the road, turn right at Dirty Dicks pub onto Middlesex Street. The pub is about 100 metres down on the right-hand side and we meet in the function room downstairs.

Thanks Judith and David! Being clear on such things so everyone understands "rules of play" is always a plus! Without nonetheless detracting from the lovely informal nature of this buoyant writers' group. Till next.

    Hi Yensa
Sorry if this was ambiguous. I will make it clear at any future workshops that work should be handed back unless participant asks reader for permission to keep a copy.

Re keeping or returning copies of work to the writer, I as co-host could have clarified the matter and apologise that it was unclear. I myself am often uncertain at these meetings, thinking that the author might feel offended if I don't want to hang on to the copy of their work but ending up handing it back because I see other people doing so. When I have read at a meeting I have had mixed feelings about my copies being returned to me - "Don't they want to take it away and read it again? At the same time, if they take it away, will they write my novel instead of me doing it?" The fact I have experienced such feelings shows that the matter has not, in my hearing, been discussed or resolved into a clearly-stated rule. I apologise, Yensa, for any resulting upset. To all I apologise for the ambiguity and any resulting discord.

Thank you all for the input, ideas and animated debate on my work and its title (!). Yensa. P.S. To the person who took a copy of my chapter away, would have preferred you ask first... the protocol is to return all copies to the author... feel free to return it to one of the event hosts next time you attend. No questions asked. Thank you.

No Tube strike. You shall not be spared...

    October 9

  • Judith S.

    Hi all,
I understand the tube strike - if it goes ahead - will start at 21:00 on Tuesday.
If it goes ahead I will be able to get there by tube and can get home by bus but we could finish by 8pm if those who can come want to do that.
If the strike is called off we can go ahead as usual.
I think they are due to go back to ACAS between now and Tuesday for possible agreement.
I get regular emails from TFL so will post a note here as soon as I know.

Hi to all coming to the Creative Writing Workshop at the Shooting Star Pub on the 14th - which is next Tuesday! Our readers for the evening will be: Chris, Louis, Erin, Yensa, Sukie and Gemma. We can also have a reserve. Please let us know at the earliest opportunity if any of you are unable to be present, so we can ensure a full house and complete quota of readers. We very much look forward to meeting you all on the night. With best wishes, Judith and David (doing our best to stand in for Lisa!)

Gemma, There's one more slot - reserve I think. But you have that.
I shouldn't start sentence with a 'but' as my English teacher used to say. But she gave up saying it!
