Guest speaker: Literary Agent, Madeleine Buston, with Q&A

This location is shown only to members

London Writers' Cafe will host a special guest talk by Madeleine Buston, Literary Agent.

Madeleine will be coming in to talk to LWC members about being an agent and what she's looking for in any new authors she takes on as clients. Plus she has some exciting news to share!

She's always looking for new talent so expect lots of advice about how you could be her next super-star bestseller! Madeleine's lists consists of woman's fiction, crime and children's fiction authors but I heard her talk in October; all writers can benefit from hearing her advice.

We'll follow Madeleine's talk with a friendly questions and answer session. So do bring along all the things you've ever wanted to ask an agent but you haven't been able to pin one down long enough to ask*

Costs: £7 per person; please pay by PayPal when you RSVP. Cash will be accepted on the night but please email us to reserve your place.

Hopefully that covers everything you'll need to know. But for any burning questions, please email us.

*Friendly, polite and earnest questions only please.

We're gonna need a bigger boat!
Wow, I knew this event would be popular but I had no idea we'd have so many of you. Unfortunately the venue isn't able to hold any more than sixty so I have to keep to this number. However, I'll talk to Madeleine and see if we can't arrange another talk later this year for those of you missing out....best, Lisa x

My Plus One just cancelled so don't need them any more, if that helps. Will pay for myself on the night.

    Thanks!

    Lisa, I'm gutted!!!

I'm now going to have to work in Wolverhampton Mon-Tue :(

If you can get Madeleine Buston to come along again later in the year, that would be great.

    See you on the 20th.

    Jib x

Just posting for the first time but on the waiting list for Madeleine - totally up for a ticket if there is one going spare - otherwise, definitely signing up for the next time she's in town! Thanks all

Praying that the #uksnow will not conspire to prevent this meetup! Surely a talk by an agent will persuade you to still come along...? If you decide you can't make it, please change your RSVP to 'not going' so others can take your place. Many thx, Lisa

Not my genre, but she was interesting and very patient with questions. Was good to get a look at a real agent - disillusioning in a good way.

Madeleine was really passionate about what she does and made a compelling speaker. She brought examples of submission letters and read excerpts of the first chapters of books that 'spoke' to her which gave an insight into what agents want. It was at odds with online advice but I have to admit, I would take her advice any day. I picked up lots of useful tips and the other members were very friendly and pleasant.

Madeleine was informative, and willing to answer a lot of questions. Really useful to have the insider view on what is likely to get read.

I thought the evening was very worthwhile and I'm really glad I went. Madeleine was very interesting. She gave a lot of insight into the work of a literary agent and the publishing industry as a whole. She also gave very helpful answers to the plentiful questions. With thanks to the organisers.

This was an excellent insight into the work of an agent. It impressed home that getting an agent on side is the actual mark of success, because the impression was given that they will find you a publisher. The insight she gave was both inspiring and daunting in equal measure, and her tips were very useful. I do feel a bit discouraged, but only by how difficult it is. Madeleine came across as charming and understanding so the discouragement is in no way a reflection of her talk. However it is always good to have a full understanding of the obstacles that we face.

A wonderful insight into an agent's mind and approach to submissions. I especially valued Madeleine sharing winning cover letters with us, which felt like a rare privelege. A nice long Q&A session as well, which was great. Thank you!

I thought Madeleine was excellent. Honest, refreshing and I loved her enthusiasm. I also felt she instilled confidence in her audience - she certainly made me feel inspired to submit my novel to agents. I thought the questions were really well answered too.
