Unpicking your plot with Jeremy Sheldon

Is plotting giving you grief? I may have found a good solution...

We'll be joined by author, screenwriter and lecturer (Birkbeck/Imperial Col.) Jeremy Sheldon on the plotting problems we all encounter and how to spot them. According to Jeremy there are four main problems all writers face when plotting their stories and he's convinced me that once you know what to look for, you'll know how to move the work in the right direction. Great news, no? I attended Jeremy's workshop on at Getting Published day in March and it was so good, I asked him to come in and give this workshop for us. You're welcome.

Visit Jeremy's blog for more info: http://www.wordspersecond.com/ and follow him on Twitter @JeremyRSheldon

More about Jeremy:
Jeremy is a screenwriter, author and lecturer with 15 years’ experience in film, publishing, higher education and communications. His film credits include Best Laid Plans and urban action-thriller Montana, both produced by MoliFilms. Other film projects include feature-animation Captain Cody Malone vs. The Mysterious Martians From Mars and action-thriller Beyond the Mountain, both in development with Well Forged Films, and Gran Theft Ortho, a comedy written with the BBC’s Nick Knowles and set to shoot in late 2013.

Jeremy has worked as a script-reader for Miramax, Working Title and Icon Productions and continues to work in a development role for a number of producers including Mark Foligno (The King’s Speech, Moon) and Deepak Sikka (The King’s Speech, Mandela). Jonathan Cape have also published two works of his fiction, The Comfort Zone and The Smiling Affair.

Jeremy also teaches Screenwriting and Genre & Narrative on the MA Creative Writing programme at Birkbeck, University of London and at the London Film Academy. He has undertaken teaching and training projects for organisations as diverse as the Arvon Foundation, Imperial College of Science and Technology, the British Council, the Ministry of Education in Singapore, the University of Salford, the McGraw Hill Companies and Eton College. He is a graduate of the MA in Creative Writing at UEA.

Hopefully that covers everything you'll need to know but for any burning questions, please email us.

Costs: £10 per person; please pay by PayPal when you RSVP.

Location: The Shooting Star is less than 5mins walk from Liverpool Street station, on the central Line. See google maps for details.

Take the Bishopsgate exit from the main rail concourse, cross the road, turn left at Dirty Dicks pub onto Middlesex Street. The pub is about 100 metres down on the right-hand side, past Nandos, and we meet in the function room downstairs.

Learned a lot last night and got some good ideas for how to progress my novel.

This was an excellent session. Extremely thought provoking and relevant. I think I can now move forward with my book - Jeremy's presentation of the architecture was helpful because I've "lost the plot" and last night's session will help me to take a different approach to getting back on track. Another success, Lisa! Thank you.

This was an excellent talk! He was a great speaker, full of usable info.

I was late and only glimpsed Plot Problem no. 4 (moving forward too quickly) on the screen. I'm dying to know: what were 1-3??

Sorry for late notice, but work has come up and I can't make this - gutted as plot is my sticking point. I'll forfeit a refund as punishment. Hope everyone enjoys the talk!

Hi, is it possible to arrive as a (late) walk-in and pay on the door? I'm not sure yet if I can come, but I'd like to catch the end if I can. Thought I should ask! :)

Sorry Lisa, can't make it. Down with a bad flu. No summer and a bad flu to boot. Not fair! Hopefully I can use the £10 for another event.
