Many of us have done a ride from Left Hand to Niwot via the "Secret Passage" - a back door to a closed street. The ride is very scenic - the greenway from Left Hand to Airport Rd, then to another greenway along a small creek out to the new Blue Skies park. After a short ride on roads, we drop into a very posh neighborhood of McMansions, and exit out onto dirt roads in the county. They're pretty green still, and it's very peaceful on a Sunday morning. We get to 73rd which takes us to Niwot Road. The Niwot Road crossing of 119 is pretty sketchy still, but mid morning on Sunday should be low key. Up Niwot Road is the Garden Gate Cafe where we can refuel out in the sunshine. The way home starts along the LoBo trail, then crosses 119 at Fordham Road. Wind through northern Longmont pretty industrial areas until we get to Nelson Road to Hover St. From Hover we ride one of two ways to get to Boston street east ... right back to Left Hand. The total ride is 18.5 miles: 10 to the Cafe and 8.5 back to Left Hand. Just in time for a brew, should those last 8.5 miles have left you thirsty :-)
This is a moderate level ride, mostly because of the distance. There are no lung-sucking hills, and a lot of it is on very lightly traveled roads. Best for hybrids or mtn bikes, but easily doable on a road bike. And - we break it up with second breakfast!!
