Paradise Falls and Lizard Rock, Wildwood and Conejo Canyons, 10-12 miles

We will Explore both Wildwood Park and the new Conejo Canyons park in Thousand Oaks.

From the parking lot on Avenida de los Arboles, we will take the Mesa trail west to Lizard Rock, Then head north and drop down into the creek gorge, and cross the creek at the new bridge. Then climb up the hill to the ridge line that overlooks Camarillo and the Channel Islands, return via the Hill Canyon traill and before passing through the restored wetland, cross Conejo Creek again WHICH MIGHT GET YOUR SHOES WET. Then we take the Lynnmere trail up the hill and alongside some hilltop homes, dropping down again into the canyon a little upstream of Paradise Falls. We pass a civilized restroom there. Then we go downstream to the falls, and head back to the cars while passing Indian cave and Indian creek waterfall.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: 101 freeway west to Thousand Oaks, exit at Lynn Road. Turn right and go north 3 miles to Avenida de los Arboles and turn left (west). There is a big sign saying "Wildwood Park thisaway" here. Follow the road all the way until it ends at the Wildwood Park parking lot. (The road makes a sharp right turn here--instead, turn left into the parking lot). If parking lot is full, there is street parking or an overflow lot 1/3rd mile to the east at the Wildflower Park and Ball field. See the printable map below!

HIGHLIGHTS:

--Wildflowers and cacti

--Lots of water in the creek

--the 35 foot Paradise Falls and a smaller waterfall along the Indian Creek trail

--Indian Cave

That was a lot of fun, but next time let's all bring a tree, there was sun everywhere.

Horrendous traffic getting there... never will attempt a hike 50 miles away that starts at 2:00p.m. off the 405. Just lessons learned . We hiked around but too many different trails and no signage around the trails to point us in the right direction.

30 hikers went by your house?

      June 17, 2013

Missed you guys by a few minutes (silly 101 traffic). Hiked to the falls, to lizard rock, to the teepee. No sign of a big, loud group.

    June 16, 2013

    • Larry T

Jim, wish I would have seen you out there wandering around. I needed some comedy time yesterday!

Rex & all - thanks for the really fun hike! Traffic was awful but the hike was worth it. I hope to see you all again!

Got there about 15-20 mins late, luckily we saw the group just leaving as we parked and ran to catch up. Great hike, great group, still can't believe I hiked over 12 miles!

  • Paul H.

This was a great hike with good company - Paradise Falls is stunning. Personally I would have skipped the Conejo Canyons part - four miles too far. But it's good for the soul, if not for the knees!

    June 16, 2013

  • Larry T

Stopped on the way to meet with a carpool but couldn't find them. Threw me back 25 minutes. Then traffic moved slow on 405 and 101 for the next 45 miles. Got there 5 minutes too late and missed the hiking group. Ended up hiking 5 miles or so around the area. Bad choice on my part trying to get to a hike 60 miles away in Southern California.

Last time I went here (with Dean) there was sewer repair work going on and the path to Paradise Falls was blocked. Anyone know if it's accessible now?

It has all been completed some time ago

What is the actual time for the hike? 2PM or 8AM? I recently got an email saying it was changed to 8am.

    June 14, 2013

    • rexfrankel

Start is still at 2 pm. Whoever sent the 8 am email must have been talking about a different hike.

      Thank you!

      June 14, 2013

What's the level if the hike? Miles / elevation gain?

    Thanks

    June 12, 2013

The description says 12 miles...but with Rex it's never accurate, which makes his hike interesting.

Hi Rex, I tried to find the trail back in Nov or Dec and never found it. My GPS kept bringing me in front of a house?

Any clue? Also, I will not finish the hike either. My back is acting up.

    June 11, 2013

    • Rimona

Thanks for the info, but my GPS is in my phone and do not accept "numbers", that's why I always get lost or never find the place. I'll try with google on my laptop.

      June 11, 2013

  • Megan C.

    Can't wait!

    June 11, 2013

  • Estellaleigh F.

Sorry, didn't mean to ask a provocative question, just trying to judge if I can keep up with this hike or not so as not to negatively affect the group. Thanks for the detailed answer.

    MILEAGE: 10 to 12 miles

    1 · June 11, 2013

  • Paul

I will try and make it but will only hike for a small part of the hike as I have a pulled hamspring muscles and have been taking a week off to see how it feels.

    June 11, 2013

  • Estellaleigh F.

The distance is fine, what's the elevation gain and on a scale of 1-10 what's the difficulty? Thanks!

    June 11, 2013

  • Kathleen F.

I'm in, so long as the heat doesn't creep up by the weekend. Last weather prediction I saw was 71 deg high, 58 deg low--great temps for hiking.
