HIKING/TRAIL RUNNING: Cahuenga Peak From West Side Cardio Workout - Advanced

Note: New meeting location

Join us for a great evening workout to Cahuenga Peak, this time starting from the west side of the park. The views of the city lights are amazing and it sure beats that boring treadmill/stairmaster in the gym. Chances are you'll get a much better workout too. Cahuenga Peak is now the highest peak in Griffith Park since the purchase of the private land west of the Hollywood sign in 2010. This is a really neat area, a little pocket of "wilderness" in the middle of LA.

Training Concept:
This will essentially be a form of interval training, which is actually quite effective for increasing your cardio capacity/fitness level. Since we are all at different fitness levels some of us will likely keep a faster pace than others. We'll all try to push ourselves a bit to get our heart rate up and then catch our breath and re-group at the junctions and tops.

Difficulty: ADVANCED
You need to be well conditioned for this workout. Although the distance is short this is a high intensity workout and several sections are very steep. This is not a slow paced "social hike". We'll keep a fast pace power-walking or jogging to get our heart rate up to improve our conditioning. If you don't like running this may not be a good workout for you.

Since we typically do different trails every week the difficulty and distance varies. In general though the workouts are easiest the first Thursday of the month and most difficulty the last Thursday of the month.

Extra Weight Option:
For those of you who are very fast and may feel the group is not moving fast enough, consider bringing a weight vest or backpack with weight - sand, books etc. Avoid hard objects like rocks though as it may hurt your back. I would only suggest this if you have attended one of these and know that you can move a lot faster than the group. The extra weight will slow you down significantly.

The Plan:
We'll meet at the "Y" intersection of Primera Ave. and La Suvida Dr. (see photo) at about 6:45 PM, do some stretching and introductions etc. and get started at 7:00 PM sharp.

We'll start heading up Primera and follow a trail that takes us up to the peak from the west. We'll then head down to the the lone tree where we will have a great view of Burbank. There we'll catch our breath for a few minutes while enjoying the city view before heading back a different way.

Distance & Elevation Gain:
6.5 miles or so and about 1800 ft or so cumulative elevation gain/loss.

Time Required:
About 2 hours or so.

What To Bring:
- Headlamp (best) or flashlight and spare batteries (important)
- Trail running shoes or flexible hiking booths with plenty of traction (important)
- Hydration system (best) or bottle with water or Gatorade etc.
- Your cell phone
- Layered clothing including a light wind breaker jacket
- Consider camera

Directions:
Click here for Google directions to the meeting spot.

Parking:
There should be plenty of parking on La Suvida Dr.

No Shows:
It is inconsiderate to the organizer and anyone on the waiting list to RSVP and not show up, therefore I am registering no-shows. For this event you need to change your RSVP to "No" minimum 30 minutes before the start of the event. If you have multiple no-shows on your record you may not be admitted to events where there are people on the waiting list.

DISCLAIMER:
Please ensure that you are in good health before participating in a high intensity activity like this one. If you are in doubt please get a check-up with a physician. As an event organizer I assume absolutely no responsibility for you. I am simply a "training buddy", nothing more. If you choose to participate, you assume all responsibility for yourself and agree not to hold me or our Meetup group liable in any way.

If any of you are up for doing another cardio workout this Saturday, I am doing a great and STEEP trail on the west side, the best workout trail I know in that area.

Victor I can give you a little challenge to see if you can beat my best time from the gate to the bench of just under 30 minutes. I am sure you will ;-)

This question us for David S. David have you done this hike before and if you have do you think I can manage it?

    June 18, 2014

    • Stein

Well, Kharin, I have never hiked with you before so I have no idea of your abilities, but I just want you to get a better idea of what to expect. In general I recommend to people to start with the first of the month "newcomer's" version especially if they have any doubts about their abilities. Most of those attending tend to be surprised at how hard these workouts are, even runners. This is definitely not for anyone. You need to be quite fit, athletic, and well trained to keep up with the group.

The group moves fast up very steep and rugged trails and most are regulars who have been doing this for a long time. Falling behind is normal as a newcomer. The issue is more about how far behind. A few minutes is not a problem, 10-15 or more is a bit much. Last time we did this trail a couple of ladies over-estimated their abilities ended up a lot further behind than that. Hope this gives you a better idea.

Just wanted to make sure that I have the right group. You guys do light rock climbing sometimes right? Or atleast you did last week?

Hey Adam, it's Rashida. Your face is missing from the pic! =) Yes, this is the same group as last week.

      June 18, 2014

    • Stein

No we don't do rock climbing, although sometimes the trail is steep enough for what would be considered class 3 scrambling like last week.
