Laissez les bons temps rouler! For the past 22 years LA's Farmers Market has hosted the coolest Mardi Gras party this side of Bourbon Street. "One of the best places to party for Mardi Gras in Los Angeles" according to CBS News. The featured headliner is Grammy-nominated Lisa Haley and the Zydekats, of whom the LA Times wrote, "Joyful, exotic... a la the bluesy moans of Janis Joplin." The Market will have a special Mardi Gras paraphernalia stand, plenty of Dixie Beer and great Creole cuisine. The Gumbo Pot will be serving up gumbo, po' boys and beignets. "Farmers Market does a great job. It's festive. Everyone gets caught up in the moment. It's not New Orleans, but it'll do. I just wish I could get some real beignets. The Gumbot Pot's are respectable--but nowhere near Cafe Du Monde." -- Lionel

A Blue Fiddle Records Zydeco/Cajun artist, Lisa’s strong vocals, boundless energy and blue violin "Louie" have spread her infectious "Zydecosis" to more than 20 countries and the US. She has a distinctive sound that embraces the multi-faceted genres of Louisiana music, including its French, Irish Celtic, Blues and Jazz genres, in which she is well-versed. Her album, King Cake, reached #15 on the Billboard World chart.

Hi, I had a great time but did not find anyone form the meet up. But I met with some friends and danced and enjoyed the music.

I enjoyed the Mardi Gras but had no idea where anyone was. Disappointed that I don't believe I got an email giving me info on where you were congregating. A little disappointing for me.

    February 11, 2013

    • Lionel

Terry, 6 Hosts (including me) arrived an hour early to save tables. In all we had 6 tables clearly marked with MEETUP signs. We had an area all to ourselves. I was wearing a MEETUP badge and occasionally walked through the patio. In fact there were complaints that there were too many Meetup people at this event; that it was unfair to the "regulars." One regular complained, "There are Meetup people everywhere!"

    Lionel,
Nice meeting you and Marjorie, Trulia, Mimi, and others. I found Lisa Haley & Zydecats music to be more rock-a-billy than true creole zydeco but it was a fun gathering. Hope to see you guys at more concerts. Sorry I missed the Ricardo Lemvo concert. He is one of my local favorites for salsa / mambo music.

The Co-hosts are listed on the upper right-hand side of this webpage, with "EVENT HOST" under their name. We're meeting on the West Patio. I'll have a sign.

  • Lionel

    DO YOU WANT TO CO-HOST?........

I have 4 openings for co-hosts. These coveted positions usually go to veteran members with good attendance. But for this event newbies can co-host. All you have to do is show up at 4:30, save a table, and greet arrivals. It's FUN and you get to meet lots of PEOPLE! Email me if interested.

Not all 372 members will show up. Evenso it's gonna be crowded. But that will only make it MORE AUTHENTIC! It's gonna be like being in the Quarter without hopping a plane to New Orleans.

Hows the parking here & is there paid parking as well as cost to get in? Would like to be prepared ; )

    February 5, 2013

The Farmer market is free to enter as is the event. Its held at the Gumbo Pot Restaurant. Even the beads are free if you catch them. There is entertainment Saturday, Sunday and on Fat Tuesday. Parking in challenging, especially in the front lots on Fairfax. You get two hours of free parking with validation and then its $4. an hour after that. You can park at The Grove lot, 1 hour free parking with validation and $4 to $5 a hour after that. There are dozens of food stalls to validate at the Farmer's Market. The best acts start after 6PM. You can get the full schedule online by checking the Farmer's Market Website.

Hi! Are we planning to sit together or is this a non-hosted event? Mardi Gras is always fun at the Farmer's Market! (However, it does get crowded, so it might be difficult to find each other).

Have you been to the Mardi Gras Festival in Belmont Shore/Long Beach. It's going to be on the same day and it starts at 11:30 am. I think I want to wear a costume :)

How to find the group? We'll be everwhere! We're gonna take over the Market!

      February 4, 2013

  • Tony

How many people does this venue hold?

    January 28, 2013

    • Lionel

Yes it will be crowded, but that only intensifies the feeling of being in the French Quarter--which gets so crowded you can't move. This is going to be a BLAST!!!!!!

      February 4, 2013

    • Lionel

Get there EARLY and you'll be fine.
