SongFest Sings America: Celebrating Leonard Bernstein

  • Jul 13, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Grand Performances presents SongFest Sings America: Celebrating Leonard Bernstein at the wondrous Water Court with pre-concert conversation with Jamie Bernstein (composer's daughter) and Alan Chapman of KUSC. We'll be having a picnic prior to the concert and an after-party at Noe.

The evening treats audiences to several of the composer’s works, including the lush and lyrical Songfest: A Cycle of American Poets, premiering composer John Musto’s new two-piano arrangement, as well as selections from West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide. Featured musicians include cellist Andrew Shulman, pianist Musto, and acclaimed mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer. Special guest Jamie Bernstein provides narration throughout this celebration of her father’s rich musical legacy.

Celebrating 26 years of serving the people of Los Angeles, Grand Performances has become the foremost free concert series in L.A., presenting free performing arts that reflect the best of L.A.'s global culture.

PRE-CONCERT PICNIC

The pre-concert picnic is where you'll make new friends and say "Hi" to old ones. A great way to meet someone is to offer them something! So... bring something to share! Finger eats such as charcuterie, salumi, cheeses, hummus, fresh produce such as veggies, grapes, dried fruits such as dates or nuts, olives or crackers, bread--foods that are easy to eat without utensils. And don't forget water. Also bring a jacket and a flashlight. No pets. 18 and over.

AFTER-PARTY

Join us for bites and cocktails at the upscale Noe immediately following the concert. Noe is immediately adjacent to the Water Court. $5 valet parking with validation.

Hi Tim, I thought I'd send you the link of the piano pieces by Erik Satie, that you couldn't hear due to the weak reception.

    • Heather

Ok, I don't know what happened. I just sent you a reply, actually before I was finished writing. I do that too often, hitting the return key before I am ready to send. And now, I don't see it. I don't know where it went. Anyways, here is the link to Erik Satie's piano pieces that I LOVE. http://www.youtube.co... I fell in love with this the very first time I heard them. See if you like them.

Beautiful voices singing a selection of Bernstein's lesser-known songs, plus two pieces from "West Side Story." Each was introduced and explained by his daughter, Jamie Bernstein. Very informative and enjoyable.

They were excellent singers from Colburn School of Music. The first part was a little boring, but for those of us who stayed after the intermission had a blast. It was so much fun.

    Lionel,
Can you fix the map of the Starbucks? It is wrong and I don't know how to fix it. I tried. It shows the same address in the city of San Pedro in the South Bay. When I added the zip code 90012, it went to downtown LA, but it is still wrong......Way up close to 101 FWY which is more like Temple St, not south of 3rd St.

    • Tim

      I corrected it.

Question: Where is the best and cheapest place to park?

    July 11, 2013

    • Heather

On the message above, I pressed the return key too soon and added 'S. Hill' at the end of the web address by mistake. I am not familiar with the parking around Cal Plaza, but I've seen a few $5 sign as I pass through the area many times. I am thinking of parking at Joe's Parking garage at 338 S. Hill and walk up Angeles Flight just for the fun of it.

Oops! I don't know what happened. Something is wrong with the link for parking. Let's try this. http://myjoesautopark... Click 'Find Parking in Downtown LA' on the bottom center.

Btw, last time I went to a Cal Plaza concert I walked over to Noe afterward. It's just across the courtyard so you don't have to move your car :)

Thank you, Lionel, for changing the meeting place to Starbucks, and making the invitation look a lot nicer. It'll be fun. :-)
