LA Free Concerts is the "largest and friendliest music club in the world."

Hailing from working-class Birmingham, England, Dave Wakeling and The English Beat entered the music scene in the troubled times of 1979. When The English Beat rushed on to the music scene it was a time of social, political and musical upheaval. Into this storm came they came, trying to calm the waters with their simple message of love and unity set to a great dance beat. The six member band consisted of singer/songwriter Dave Wakeling (vocals & guitar), Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums), Saxa (saxophone) and Ranking Roger (toasting). The band managed to fuse all of their respective musical influences – soul, reggae, pop and punk – into a unique sound that was highly danceable. Along with contemporaries such as The Specials, The Selecter and Madness, The English Beat became one of the most popular and influential bands of the British Two Tone Ska movement. Over the course of three albums, The English Beat achieved great success in their home country, charting several singles into the top 10. In addition to their UK chart success, in America the band found a solid base of young fans eager to dance to the their hypnotic rhythms and absorb their message of peace, love & unity. Their constant touring with iconic bands such as The Clash and The Police helped to boost their popularity in the States.

Thank you Barbara for an incredible job! The 3 events you have hosted have made this one of the best summers ever for LA Free Concerts. You don't shy away from the mega events that might make other organizers anxious.

On behalf of the organizers and members of LA Free Concerts it give me great pleasure to award you the highly coveted ELITE badge.

Sounds great. I love biking to the twilight concerts at the pier. But I can't get there until after 7. I hope I'll be able to find the LA free concerts group. Will there be any color theme / flags to identify LA Free concert group?

Responsible for the 80’s renaissance of ska, The Beat introduced classics to a new generation. *smile* I can’t wait to see them after all these years!!

ATTENTION: there's confusion about the 2 English Beat events. This is the BEACH PARTY group. This group will party on the beach and then relocate to the pier during intermission for the English Beat. The PIER group will stand and watch the entire concert on the pier and will be closer to the stage. Link to pier group http://www.meetup.com/losangelesfreeconcerts/events/129852382/
