Big Lucky at the Farmer's Market

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynTlrHN9FgE

Big Lucky, Los Angeles's premiere swing band, makes an appearance at the Farmer's Market. We'll enjoy Happy Hour at EB's Beer & Wine Bar. And yes, there will be dancing! It's ok to come by yourself--you won't be by yourself for long!

Big Lucky is fronted by meow meow diva Val Peterson, bandleader Paul Frederick is arranger & saxophonist, and the band is filled out with some of the finest touring and studio musicians in Los Angeles. The band specializes in the toe-tapping sounds of the prohibition era: they take you back to the time when hip was hep, and swing was king. Big Lucky's first album is entitledThe Venture Capital Follies of 1929.  Critiques of the album praised it’s attention to detail, superlative sound quality and excellent musicianship. It’s release led to gigs for Big Lucky at venues such as the landmark Biltmore hotel in downtown LA, as well as a guest appearance on the hit HBO show Entourage. Big Lucky is currently recording a new album, Around the World with Big Lucky.  The album blends European, folk, and gypsy elements with Mancini-esque orchestrations to transport us on a musical journey straight into a world of martini chic. Bandleader Paul is a member of LAFC.

The West Patio of the Original Farmers Market, where EB's Beer & Wine Bar is located, is frequently lauded as the best place for free live music in Los Angeles, and has the most varied, affordable beer and wine list imaginable. Happy Hour is from 4 to 7.

I just don't understand lack of male interest at these events. With abundant opportunities to meet fantastic, beautiful women. Mind-boggling.

We just need a sip or two of wine to get going, Sheri...

Well, there's a reason for low ratings. All events in this group are Hosted, which raises expectations. Members in this group are spoiled. They expect reserved seating all night long, to be greeted and have your name remembered by the host, and to meet Snow White and Prince Charming lol. Oh and a multi-Grammy Award winning entertainer too, lol. Low ratings are a reminder that we can do better. It's tough being an organizer/host at this group. I really appreciate the effort put forth by Karen and all of our other orgs & hosts. These people are the reason LA Free Concerts is the "largest and friendliest music club in the world."

In any event, 4 out of 5 stars is not low :-)

THANK YOU for setting this up. If it wasn't for organizers of these meetups, most of us would be home on our couch!! Every event is a 5-star rating cuz I appreciate all you do for us. Anyone who rates events less than that, they're the party poopers who don't know how to have a good time! haha! Cheers and see you all soon!

      Well put Vivi.

I haven't been to the Farmers Market in years and never to hear & dance to a swing band. I had a great time - met several really nice people and look forward to seeing them again at future events. My apologies if I didn't send you the greeting - but I'm horrible at names and didn't recognize a lot of the photos ... sucks getting old =)

Karen and Marcus, thanks for a very fun time. Good music, nice people and starting to shake some rust off of my dancing legs.

Kudos to event host Karen: she brought professional print signs for "meet-up" and the (in)famous red balloon. She made my presence unnecessary. FYI: she loves to dance, and she has some cool moves. Thanks to everybody who showed up--a small fraction of those who RSVP'd. Typical. The music was very good, but rather than be in the middle of a food court, I prefer LACMA's outdoor free jazz and latin events--and the foodie component to our pic-nics. But, I had fun and enjoyed some good conversation.

Attention everyone... You can't tell from his picture, lol, but this is THE Paul! Yes, the esteemed bandleader of Big Lucky who will be providing our entertainment tonight. I'd like to personally thank Paul for bringing this event to the group, and for playing for us tonight.

Hey everybody! This looks like a fun time for all; and afterwards, for those who want more, we will go to Mixology at the Grove for libations or whatever--it's just steps away. I will be there around 6:00 p.m. Look for a RED BALOON & me; and let the party begin!

I'm going to haunt all "no shows" (late is ok), so if you can't make it, please timely change your RSVP. Otherwise: BOOH.

Pulled the sign file & will have a sign or 2 on the table. Will be there around 6

    1 · June 12, 2014

ATTENTION: as of today noone has volunteered to put a Meetup sign on a table. Without a Meetup sign, there is no way for members to find one another, and no reason to have a "meetup." Without a volunteer I'll have to cancel this event.

Mixology 101 is right around there in the farmers market, I think, open till almost midnight.

I plan on being there - hopefully well before 6:30. You don't mention when the band plays. Is it after the happy hour. Also, are we allowed to bring chairs or is that a big no-no?

    June 10, 2014

    • Karen (.

Thanks Dale. You can't tell by the photo if there are tables at the bar.

      June 10, 2014

Theres not just a bar. There's also a bunch of restaurants and other places to buy assorted groceries, sweets, nuts, ht sauces, souvenirs...

Big "Lucky" is performing on Friday the 13th--one of the unluckiest days of the year... ironic.
