Hiking for Health CHALLENGE EVENT #1: 6 Mile Cherokee Park Trail Hike

NOTE: THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THAT IT MAY BE TOO MUDDY TO HIKE WITHOUT DAMAGING THE TRAILS.  IF THAT'S THE CASE WE WILL WALK THE SCENIC LOOP (ROAD) FOR TWO OR THREE LAPS.

***SIGN UP ON THE WAITING LIST. ***

I WILL MOVE ANYONE WHO HAS COMPLETED ONE LAP OF SILTSTONE / PURPLE HEART COURSE IN UNDER 2 HOURS BY THE TIME OF THE EVENT OVER TO THE "YES" LIST.

Hey Tony, I am going to sign up for this on waiting list in the hopes you move it to another time because I want to do Bernheim too that day, which is impossible. (Thanks you guys for coordinating..NOT!) Olmstead strongly encourages us to stay off the trails when they are muddy so I try and respect that. Any chance you would consider moving these Cherokee Trail hikes to a Sunday? Selfishly 20 miles closer to my house than JMF.

    • tippi

I did not mean to sound like a mud trail know it all, I was responding to your original post and hoping it would have to be rescheduled because I was being selfish and wanted to do it. hope no one took that the wrong way. if it is going to be this muddy, at least let it SNOW!

      February 27, 2013

    • Tony Shulthise

No offense taken at all, Tippi. Hope you can make one of the Challenge events! Let me know if you are coming to this one at the new rescheduled date and I'll add you to the "yes" RSVP's. Cya!

      February 27, 2013

  • Tony Shulthise

Looks like Cherokee might be too wet this Saturday if we get all the rain they are calling for so this event may be postponed for one week. We'll see. I'll update it by Friday afternoon if anything changes.

    February 25, 2013

  • Chris

What a great idea. Congrats on that one, Tony.

    February 22, 2013

  • Jeffery Moore

Turns out I will now be able to attend. Please remove me so a stand by can join.
    Thanks

    • Tony Shulthise

Jeffery... all you need to do is click on "Change RSVP" in the upper right then click on "no" and change your RSVP comments or delete them. Sorry you can't make it.

      February 20, 2013

  • Tony Shulthise

Just a reminder, this is a Hiking for Health special event. If you haven't already done so, you need to start working toward completing a Level 2 hike to qualify to attend this one. ANYONE WHO HAS HIKED THE SILTSTONE / PURPLE HEART 4.5 MILE COURSE IN UNDER TWO HOURS IN THE PAST YEAR QUALIFIES. You can hike with Chris Kurth (Tues, Thurs, Saturday), with me (some Saturdays) or with a friend, but you will have to complete that course in under two hours to qualify to attend this hike. I'll modify RVSP's a few days before the event as needed. Please feel free to contact me or Chris Kurth if you would like help reaching that goal!

    February 18, 2013

  • Tony Shulthise

If anyone wants to know how to prequalify for this hike, or any of the HfH STRETCH GOAL EVENTS, feel free to shoot me an email by clicking on my picture to the left then clicking on "Email". Its pretty easy to work up to a Level 2 pace if you walk or hike a couple times per week between now and this event. I'm willing to help anyone who wants help. Just ask! Just for a reference... because of the hills, a 3 mph pace on the Cherokee trails is equivalent to a 4-4.5 mph (13 to 15 min/mile) on flat ground.

Let me know how I can help you all get ready for this event!!

Thanks Tony- I'll do one of the level ones first to see where I am.

If you haven't attended any of the Hiking for Health events, here's a great place to start... http://www.louisvillehikingmeet...

    February 13, 2013

  • vicki stanley

I am at level 2. Will I do okay on this hike?

    February 13, 2013

    • Tony Shulthise

Vicki, if you completed the Siltstone/Purple Heart course in under two hours then you are prequalified for this event. I lost my list that tracked everyone's times so let me know if that's the case for you. Thanks!
